안개 탐정 : 네온 바다의 이야기는 2019년 4월 30일에 출시된 'Tales of the Neon Sea'를 스토브인디에서 독점으로 한글화하여 6월 27일에 출시한 신작 수사 어드벤처 게임이다.
로봇이 인간 사회에 어우러져, 사회의 구성원으로서 인간과 더불어 함께 살아가는 세계를 2140년을 배경으로 하는 이 작품은 픽셀 아트로 구현해 낸 알록달록한 색감의 사이버펑크 세계관의 매력이 돋보이는 작품이다.
액션 요소는 거의 없지만,
횡스크롤 진행을 채택하고 있는 부분이나 사이버펑크 세계관을 배경으로 하며, 픽셀 아트 게임이라는 점에서, 22년 3월 17일에 출시된 '기원 : 변이 (ANNO: Mutationem)'를 떠올리게 만드는 작품이기도 하다.
게임의 진행은 문제 해결을 위한 퍼즐 중심으로 이루어지기 때문에,
컨트롤 위주의 피지컬적인 요소보다 두뇌 회전 기반의 뇌지컬을 좋아하시는 분들에게 특히 추천드린다.
게임이 시작되면,
플레이어는 알 수 없는 장소에서 커다란 낫을 든 정체불명의 존재로부터 벗어나기 위해, 부상을 입은 몸으로 필사적으로 도망쳐야만 한다.
간신히 공격자로부터 몸을 숨기는데 성공하고 나면,
신체 일부 중 적잖은 부분이 기계인 주인공이 망가진 몸을 고치기 위해 자가 수리를 하는 장면을 끝으로 프롤로그가 끝이 나고, 본격적인 플레이의 시작인 챕터 1로 이어지게 된다.
챕터 1은 프롤로그의 사건으로부터 3일 전으로 거슬러 올라간 시점에서 이야기가 시작되며,
이후 챕터 1부터 챕터 4를 아우르는 작품의 메인 스토리는 이 '3일' 동안 주인공이 겪게 되는 사건들로 구성되어 있다.
전직 경찰이었고, 현재는 탐정으로 활동 중인 주인공 '렉스'는 챕터 1에서 '페리 부인'의 살인 사건을 수사하는 과정에서, 이 사건에 '로봇'이 관련되어 있다는 사실을 알아내게 된다.
하지만 그건 이상하다.
인간과 기계와의 3년간의 대전쟁 끝에, 모든 로봇들은 영원히 인간에게 해를 끼치지 않겠다는 소스 코드를 삽입할 것이라는 약조를 받고, 긴긴 전쟁이 막을 내렸다.
그러니 로봇이 어떤 식으로든 인간에게 해를 가할 수 없다.
만약 부상을 입은 인간을 목격한다면, 모든 로봇은 프로그래밍에 따라 구조 활동을 우선하게 되어 있다.
어떻게 이런 일이 가능한 거지?
렉스는 수사를 이어가던 중 로봇의 머릿속에서 의문의 장치를 발견하게 되고, 이 '장치의 역할'을 추적하던 렉스는 생각지도 못한 거대한 존재가 자신을 기다리고 있다는 사실에 충격을 받게 된다.

15년 전 세계를 충격과 공포 속으로 몰아넣었던 희대의 연쇄 살인마, Noa가 돌아온 것이다.
불특정한 인간과 로봇들을 상대로 무차별적인 살인을 자행하였을 뿐만 아니라,
살인 현장에 인간과 로봇의 시신을 훼손하여 만든 기괴한 조형물을 자신의 시그니처로 삼았던 미치광이 살인마.
당시 렉스와 동료 경찰들은 2년의 수사 끝에 Noa를 거의 잡을 뻔하였으나,
Noa는 극적으로 경찰들의 수사망을 피해 모습을 감춰 버렸고, 그 사건으로 인해 렉스는 파트너를 잃어야 했다.
인간이었던 렉스의 몸 중 적잖은 부분이 기계화로 교체된 것도 이 사건과 관련이 있다.
비록 Noa를 체포하는 데는 실패했지만 그 일 이후로 더이상 Noa는 모습을 드러내지 않았고,
인간과 로봇들 또한 무시무시한 연쇄 살인마에 대한 기억들을 차차 잊어가게 되었다.
그런데, Noa가 다시 돌아왔다...?
13년이나 지난 지금에 와서...?
Noa가 목표로 하는 것이 무엇이든 간에, 이번에야말로 그 미치광이 놈을 반드시 잡고 말겠다고 다짐하며, 렉스는 전력을 다해 수사에 전념하게 된다.
사건의 진상으로 다가갈수록 렉스는 지독한 환상에 시달리게 되고, 충격적인 진실들에 다가가게 되는데...

기원 변이도 다양한 색감을 활용한 픽셀 아트의 매력이 정말 돋보였는데, '안개 탐정 : 네온 바다의 이야기' 역시 픽셀 아트의 매력이 잘 표현되어 있다.
'안개 탐정 네온 바다의 이야기'는 탐정 렉스가 주인공인 작품이지만 챕터 중간중간, 고양이 '윌리엄'의 도움을 받아서 게임을 진행하게 되는 구간들이 있다.
윌리엄은 직, 간접적으로 렉스의 수사를 돕거나, 렉스의 조력자가 되어서 위험에 처한 렉스를 돕는다.
고양이 '윌리엄'의 시점에서 다양한 고양이들을 만나서, 문제를 해결해 나가는 과정은 렉스로 플레이할 때와는 또 다른 재미를 선사한다.
'안개 탐정 네온 바다의 이야기'는 기본적으로 주변 탐색을 통해 다양한 아이템들을 찾고, 획득한 아이템들을 단독으로 또는 조합해 사용하는 방식으로 문제를 해결해 나가는 게임이다.
그러나 '안개 탐정'이라는 제목에서도 알 수 있듯이, '수사' 또한 이 작품 내에서는 빼놓을 수 없는 요소이다.
사건이 발생하게 되면, 플레이어는 사건 현장에 남겨져 있는 시신이나 흔적 또는 증거품들을 조사하여 단서들을 찾는 과정을 진행하게 된다.
사건의 재구성을 위한 적절한 단서들을 모두 다 찾았다면, 단서들을 조합해 추리의 톱니바퀴를 완성시켜야 한다.
톱니바퀴들을 적합한 위치에 제대로 잘 배치하게 되면, 시계를 작동시켜서 사건이 어떠한 순서로 일어나고 진행되었는지를 확인할 수 있다.
'안개 탐정 네온 바다의 이야기'는 그야말로 뇌지컬 마니아를 위한 '퍼즐 대잔치'라고 해도 과언이 아닐 만큼, 풍성하고 다양한 퍼즐들을 제공한다.
보통의 퍼즐들은 약간의 고민 끝에 바로 해결이 가능하지만,
몇몇 퍼즐들은 회전과 방향성과 관련된 문제들인데, 보기와는 달리 쉽지 않다.
이걸 회전시키면 저쪽이 따라 움직이고, 저걸 회전시키면 이쪽이 따라 회전해서 머리를 핑핑 돌게 만든다.
퍼즐 진행 중 막히게 되더라도 별도의 힌트를 제공하지는 않기 때문에, 예상외로 시간을 꽤 잡아먹게 되는 구간이기도 하다.
전선의 방향을 바꿔서 전력을 특정 지점으로 모으거나 분배하는 형태의 퍼즐이나,
한정된 전력을 주요 포인트에 나눠 사용해 가며 주변을 탐사하고, 아이템을 획득해 다음 과정으로 나아가는 과정들은 재밌는 경험을 선사해 주었다.
이외에도 정말로 많은 퍼즐 요소들을 포함하고 있기 때문에, 퍼즐 어드벤처 플레이를 즐기신다면 강력 추천해 드린다.
'안개 탐정 네온 바다의 이야기'에는 극히 적은 비중이긴 하나 액션 요소도 포함하고 있다.
적대적 비행체를 피 장치에 전력을 공급하여,
다음 지점으로 이동하는 약간의 잠입 + 퍼즐 요소도 경험할 수 있고,
렉스가 휴대하고 다니는 권총을 사용하여, 적대적 대상을 공격하는 상황도 (극히 적지만) 일부 포함되어 있다.

챕터마다 개개의 사건을 수사해 가는 형태의 작품인 줄 알았는데,
각각의 사건들이 하나의 거대한 음모와 관계가 있다는 사실이 드러나게 되면서 15년 전의 사건까지도 다시 살펴보게 만드는 과정이라든가, 15년 전과는 다른 또 다른 거대한 위협의 정체가 드러나는 과정이 흥미롭고 재밌었다.
스토브인디에서 '안개 탐정 네온 바다의 이야기'를 한글화 진행 중이라는 소식을 처음 접한 작년 연말부터 쭉 정식 출시만을 손꼽아 기다려 왔던 작품인데, 상당히 만족스러운 플레이 시간이었다.
특히, 속편을 암시하게 만드는 에필로그는 차기작에 대한 기대감도 함께 불러일으켰다.
'속편 암시'에 대해 조금 설명을 보태자면,
이번 편의 문제를 제대로 해결하지 않고 흐지부지하게 이야기를 마무리 지은 뒤 다음 시즌을 예고하는 엔딩이 아니라,
이번 이야기는 확실하게 마무리 짓고,
우리의 탐정 렉스가 다시 한번 새로운 거대한 사건에 맞닥뜨리게 되었음을 암시하는 엔딩이었다.
'Tales of the Neon Sea'가 출시된 지 어느새 4년이 넘어가고 있다.
어쩌면 개발사의 사정으로 속편은 영영 제작되지 않을 지도 모르지만, 가능하다면 이 작품의 속편도 꼭 플레이 해 보고 싶다.

이 게임의 가장 큰 특징 중 하나는 일단 '픽셀 아트'로 손꼽고 싶습니다.
'픽셀 아트'의 매력을 모르는 사람을 있을 수 있지만,
픽셀 아트의 매력에 한 번 빠지고 나면 헤어나오기 힘들다는 말이 있는 것처럼 (사실 급조하여, 지어냈습니다. ( ...)),
픽셀 아트로 구현해 낸 작품 속 사이버펑크 세계관이 마음에 들었고,
하나의 사건이 15년 전 연쇄 살인과 이어지면서, 스토리가 확장되어 가는 부분들이 흥미로워서 즐겁게 플레이했습니다.
