안녕하세요, 던전 오브 나흘벅 번역을 맡은 황현진이라고 합니다.
퀘스트나 DLC, 아이템 설명 파트를 주로 담당했었습니다!
정말 오랫동안 준비했던지라 제가 자신없는 장르임에도 불구…(전략RPG는 좋아하지만 머리가 잘 안 돌아가는 편이라 낮은 난도를 선택하는 경우가 많네요 ^_ㅜ. 열렬히 짝사랑 중입니다.) 많은 정이 붙었던 작품입니다!
특히 게임 퀄리티를 보고 많이 놀랐었어요. 아트워크나 그래픽도 훌륭했고, 거의 풀더빙인 점까지 많은 준비를 한 게임인 게 느껴졌습니다.
그만큼 아쉬웠던 점도 종종 눈에 띄었긴 해요. 스토리 면에서 아~ 조금 더 깊은 전개를 해 줬으면 좋았을 텐데, 하고 느꼈던 부분도 있었고요.
하지만 전투는 확실히 재미있게 즐겼던 기억이 납니다! 턴제 전략RPG에 익숙하신 분들은 높은 난이도로 즐겨보셔도 좋을 것 같아요.ㅎㅎ
후기를 상당히 늦게 작성하고 있는데, 많은 분들께서 이미 재밌게 플레이 해주시는 것 같아 저까지 괜히 행복해지네요!
본론으로 돌아가서, 번역 이야기를 해보려고 합니다.
번역을 하면서 이리저리 고생했던 기억이 새록새록 떠오르네요. 던전 오브 나흘벅은 프랑스 제작 게임인데, 저희는 제작사에서 제공한 영문 스크립트를 보면서 번역 작업을 진행했습니다. 조금 고생했던 추억부터 조금 풀어볼까요ㅎㅎ
제공받았던 영문 스크립트에 비문이나 고어(게임의 시대 배경을 고려한다면 적절한 단어 선택이긴 하지만요!)가 많아 "도대체 이 사람들이 무슨 말을 하려는 거지…."라는 생각을 자주 했습니다. 덕분에 팀원분들과 다 같이 영문과 프랑스어 원문, 번역이 완료된 외국어 스크립트까지 참조하여 열심히 맞추어 보았던 추억이 있습니다. ^_ㅠ
스크립트의 상태야 위에서도 말씀드렸듯 다른 언어와 대조하면 될 일이지만, 그것보다도 힘들었던 건 문화적 맥락 읽기였던 것 같아요.
게임을 즐겨주신 분들께서는 아시겠지만, 던전 오브 나흘벅은 굉장히 익살스럽게 진행되는 게임이에요. 사소한 엑스트라의 이름마저 서양 드라마나 영화에서 레퍼런스를 따온 부분이 많았습니다.
가령 야만전사가 '강철의 수수께끼'를 자주 언급하곤 했지요? 이것도 코난 엑자일에서 따온 패러디였고, D&D에서 따온 종족도 많이 있었습니다. 아는 패러디가 나오면 저도 참 반가웠지만, 혹시 모르는 게 나오면 이게 다른 매체에서 따온 것인지 아닌지조차 긴가민가하니…. 긴장되기도 했네요.
또 한국어로 살리는 게 도저히 힘든 말장난들이 나올 때마다 아쉽다는 생각이 자주 들었습니다. 게임 내 드워프의 입담이 아주 걸걸합니다. 그만큼 말장난도 아주 많이 하는 캐릭터예요. 드워프의 대사를 번역하는 게 특히 재밌었지만, 머리를 싸맸던 기억도 많이 납니다.
이런 저런 힘든 점이 있긴 했어도, 정말 재미있게 작업했습니다! 앞서 말하던 드워프 이야기를 좀 이어볼게요. DLC에서 드워프가 또 모욕 대결을 하는 장면을 맡았었는데, 본편에서도 재밌었던 부분이라 즐겁게 번역했습니다.
제작사에서 나름 드워프 세계에서는 어떤 말이 모욕적인지 계속 보여줬지요? 특히 그와 상극인 엘프와의 티키타카 장면에서 많이 드러나는데, 같은 맥락으로 그런 장면들도 번역하며 자주 웃었던 기억이 나네요.
아이템이나 스킬 설명도 디테일하게 쓰여있었고, 또 그런 설명에서만 알 수 있는 세계관의 부수적인 정보도 있어 흥미롭게 읽을 수 있었습니다. 평소에 이런 자잘한 설명 읽는 걸 참 좋아해, 플레이하실 분들께서도 즐겨주셨으면 좋겠단 생각으로 번역했습니다ㅎㅎ
새삼 캐릭터들 모두 개성이 확실했단 기억도 납니다. 캐릭터들의 말투는 다른 팀원 분들께서 먼저 지정해주셨었는데, 정말 찰떡으로 잘해주셨다고 생각했어요.
영어에는 존댓말이나 반말 어미가 없다 보니 번역할 때는 보통 캐릭터의 어휘를 바탕으로 말투를 결정하는데, 각 인물의 개성에 따라 어울리는 말투로 결정해주셔서 더욱 대사에 몰입할 수 있었던 것 같아요.
개인적으로는 상식인 포지션인 마법사가 캐릭터로서 참 좋았어요. 마법사의 말투로 쓰인 퀘스트 일지 많이 번역했다 보니 거리가 가까워졌다는 느낌이 들기도 했고요.
고압적인 귀족 여사제도, 분량은 많지 않았지만 기억에 참 많이 남는 캐릭터예요. 여사제와 관련된 퀘스트 중 하나의 내용이 아주 자극적이라… 잊을래야 잊을 수가 없네요. 직접 즐겨보셨으면 좋겠습니다!
번역하면서 좋았던 부분을 적자면 밤새도록도 쓸 수 있을 것 같은데, 글이 너무 길어질 것 같아 일단 줄이겠습니다 ^_ㅠ 저기 적힌 부분 외에도 제가 게임을 보며 재밌다고 느꼈던 부분들을 플레이어 분들께서도 즐겨주셨으면 좋겠습니다 ㅎㅎ.
검수 과정에서 오탈자를 열심히 잡는다고 잡았지만, 오타가 여전히 발견되는 상황이라 오타를 지적해주실 때마다 죄송한 마음이 많이 들었습니다.
출시 초반에 버그 문제도 있었고, 완벽하다고는 할 수 없는 출발이었지만 던전 오브 나흘벅을 즐겨주시는 분들의 애정담긴 제보로 점점 나아지고 있는 점이 괜히 뭉클해집니다.
버그나 오탈자가 완전히 고쳐지진 않았지만, 앞으로 쭉 개선해 나가며 많은 분들이 편히 즐기실 수 있는 좋은 게임이 되었으면 합니다! 플레이어 분들도, 프로그래머 분들도 항상 고생이 많으십니다.
