이 파일들을 정리하거나 SCP 관련 영상 교육 등을 받게 되는 과정에서 '플레이어'는 '칼 아스타나'가 아니라, 각각의 SCP 관련 케이스를 체험하는 당사자가 되어서 다양한 사건들을 접하게 된다.
추후 DLC 제작 가능성이 높긴 하나 (이와 관련하여 현재 개발사에서 설문 조사도 진행 중이다.),

매일 제이슨이 해야 할 일은 정해져 있다.
사막으로 나가서 쓰레기를 치워서 소각 시킨 다음, 숙소로 돌아와서 간단한 심리 검사를 진행한 후 식사를 하고 잠을 잔다.
매일 그가 해야 할 일은 그것이 전부다.
넓고 넓은 사막.
'제이슨'을 제외하고는 아무도 없는 사막에서 레이더에 의존해 트럭을 몰고 다니다, 쓰레기를 발견하면 쓰레기들을 트럭에 싣는다.
달리 다른 뭔가를 할 수 있는 것도 없기에 '제이슨'은 의미도 모른 체, 날이 밝으면 사막으로 나가 쓰레기를 줍고 소각을 하는 행동을 반복한다.
하지만 시간이 지날수록 제이슨은 자신의 몸에 또는 정신에 뭔가 이상한 변화가 나타나기 시작했음을 감지하게 된다.
이것은 현실일까, 악몽일까?
이 넓디넓은 사막에서 지금 무슨 일이 일어나고 있는 것일까?
그리고 제이슨의 운명은...?
SCP 재단 소속 요원인 '벨라'는 재단과의 연락이 끊긴 '포니 스테이션 (Site-74)'로 가서 그곳에서 무슨 일이 일어났는지를 파악할 수 있는 블랙박스를 회수하여, 재단으로 복귀하라는 명령을 받고 '포니 스테이션'으로 향하게 된다.
이곳에서 지난 48시간 동안 무슨 일이 있었던 것인지는 알 수 없지만, 벨라가 포니 스테이션에 도착했을 때에는 이미 포니 스테이션 소속 근무자는 단 한 명도 찾아볼 수 없는 상태.
더욱이 심각한 현실 왜곡 현상도 일어나고 있어서 이와 같은 현실 왜곡 이상 현상과 같은 상황에 대처하는 방법을 훈련받아온 벨라마저도 생각보다 심각한 포니 스테이션의 상황에 긴장하게 된다.
다들 어디로 가버린 것일까?
아니, 과연 살아있는 사람이 있기나 한 걸까?
벨라는 이곳에서 무슨 일이 있었건 간에, 이 일을 자신 혼자서만 감당하는 것에는 무리가 있다고 판단하여 재단 쪽에 지원을 요청하지만,
추후 벨라를 구출한 재단 쪽 관계자들의 말에 따르면, 그날 벨라로부터 재단으로 걸려온 연락은 단 한 통도 없었다고 한다.
애초에 당시 포니 스테이션의 모든 통신은 두절된 상태였기에, '전화를 건다'라는 것 자체가 불가능했다는 것이다.
그렇다면 벨라가 기억하고 있는 이 기억들은 무엇일까?
벨라는 자신의 기억마저도 심하게 왜곡되어 있다는 사실에 당황하게 된다.
그리고 벨라를 쫓아오는 정체불명의 괴생명체.
그리고 포니 스테이션 곳곳에서 발견되는 참사의 증거와 흔적들.
도대체 이곳에서 무슨 일이 일어난 것일까?
세 번째 이야기는 한 타임 쉬어가는 이야기이다.
첫 번째, 두 번째 에피소드를 다소 긴장한 상태로 진행한 게이머들이라면 세 번째 에피소드는 마음 편하게 '짧은 동화 한 편'을 듣는 기분으로 진행하면 된다.
세 번째 이야기는 한 소년과 종이 용의 우정을 배경으로 하는 감동 스토리로 스팀 리뷰 평가 중에서는 '제일 지루한 에피소드'였다는 평을 한 유저분도 계셨지만,
난 이 에피소드도 상당히 마음에 들었다.
물론 '공포 장르'와는 완전히 동떨어져 있기 때문에, '공포 게임'을 바라고 플레이를 시작하신 분들에게는 '이 무슨 도중에 진 빠지는 지루한 이야기인가.' 라고 할 수도 있겠으나,
난 이 에피소드를 플레이하는 동안 꽤 감동받았고, '종이용'에게서 '반려동물'의 이미지가 떠올라서 꽤 슬프기도 했다.
세 번째 에피소드는 기본적으로 포인트 앤 클릭 방식으로 진행되지만, 중간중간 리듬 게임을 진행해야 하는 구간들도 있다.
리듬 게임 난이도 자체는 상당히 쉬운 편인데,
난 이 상당히 쉬운 난이도의 리듬 게임도 '손'과 '뇌'가 따로 움직여서, Miss가 많이 났다. ( ...)
그래서 이 업적 완료 못 했다. 😭

세 번째 에피소드에서 한 타임 쉬었으니, 네 번째 에피소드는 다시 공포 장르로 돌아온다.
네 번째 에피소드의 주인공은 한때 재단 소속의 요원이기도 했던 D 클래스 수감자로 현재 재단을 위기에 빠트리고 있는 SCP의 의식에 접속하여, 폭주 중인 SCP를 진정시켜야만 하는 임무를 부여받게 된다.
그런데 이 SCP... 아이다.
그것도 어린 소녀.
이렇게 작고 어린아이가 SCP라니...
지금부터 주인공은 엉망진창이 된 어린아이 모습을 한 SCP의 의식 속에서 아이의 문제를 해결하고, 진정시켜야만 한다.
그런데 주인공이 보게 되는 SCP의 의식 속 기억들은 생각보다도 훨씬 더 끔찍한 것들이었다.
이제 8살 남짓 된 아이가 능력 제어라는 이름 하에 전기 고문을 당하면서, 재단의 연구원들이 요구하는 일들을 성공시키기 위해 끝없이 고통받고 있었다.
이름이 있지만 이름으로는 불릴 수 없는 아이.
이 실험은 누구를 위한, 무엇을 위한 실험인가?
이것은 과연 '선'이나 '대의'를 위한 것인가?
이것이 '선'이고 '대의'라면,
'선'을 행하기 위해서는 누군가가 희생 당하는 것도 마땅한 일인가?
네 번째 에피소드는 어둡고 무서운 분위기 속에서 서글프다 못해 비극적이기까지 한 한 소녀의 인생을 제3자의 시점에서 관찰하며 접근해 가는 내용이다.
그래서 이 이야기의 결말은 무엇...?
다섯 번째 에피소드는 SCP Secret Files 본편의 마지막 에피소드이자, 가볍게 진행 가능한 미니 게임 스타일의 짧은 에피소드이다.
플레이어는 D 클래스 등급의 수감자가 되어서 지정된 위치로 가서 '특정 대상'을 관찰한 후, 박사에게로 돌아와 대상에 대해 설명을 하기만 하면 된다.
너무나 간단해서 '미션'이라고 부르기에도 민망할 정도의 간단한 일.
플레이어는 D 클래스 등급의 여러 수감자가 되어 차례대로 이 대상을 관찰하고, 보고하는 일을 반복하게 된다.
과연 이 '미션' 또는 '실험'의 의도는 무엇이고, 그 결말은...?
모든 에피소드들을 진행하고 나면, 플레이어는 다시 '칼 아스타나'가 되어 선택해야만 한다.
빨간 문과 파란 문 둘 중 어느 문으로 나갈 것인가에 대하여.
영화 '매트릭스'에서 그랬던 것처럼, '선택'해야만 하는 것이다.
'칼'이 어떤 선택을 하느냐에 따라서, SCP Secret Files는 또 한 번의 반전을 보여 주면서 이야기를 마무리한다.
분위기도 좋았고, 스토리도 좋았고, 게임을 플레이하는 재미도 있는 작품이었다.
'암네시아'나 '아웃라스트' 같은 공포를 바랐던 분들에겐 시시한 작품일 수 있다.
두 번째 에피소드와 네 번째 에피소드에서 '추격전'이 있긴 하지만 '생존 공포'라기보다는 '심리적 공포'에 가까운 작품이기 때문에,
본격적인 공포 장르의 게임을 즐기시는 유저들보다는 평소 공포 게임은 잘 못하지만 '오싹한 이야기'를 좋아하시는 분들이나 SCP 세계관을 좋아하시는 유저분들께 추천해 드리고픈 작품이다.
나는 'SCP 세계관'에 대해서 전혀 몰랐음에도 불구하고,
(다른 게임 작품을 통해서 모호하게 'SCP라는 게 있다.'라는 정도만 알고 있었다.)
이 작품을 플레이하는 동안 SCP 세계관에 푹 빠져들 만큼 재미나게 플레이했다.
SCP 세계관을 모르는 분들도 충분히 재미나게 플레이할 수 있는 작품이지만, SCP 세계관을 알고 계신 분들이라면 더욱 재미나게 플레이할 수 있는 작품이다.
SCP 세계관에 익숙지 않아서인지 게임하는 내내 계속 SCP라는 글자를 보면,
SPC로 읽혀서 막막 파리빵게뜨 떠오르고, 골라먹는 라빈스 떠오르고, 도넛 떠오르고, 해피 포인트 멤버십 꺼내야 될 것 같은 생각이 들어서, 뇌내에서 SCP와 SPC와의 충돌이 심했지만, 어쨌거나 게임은 재미나게 플레이했다.
DLC가 출시된다면 DLC를 구입할 의사도 충분하다.
다만 컨트롤러가 지원되지 않는 점과 '테두리 없는 창 모드'가 지원되지 않아서 (강제 창모드 + Borderless Gaming으로 강제로 테두리 없는 창 모드로 실행시킴) 그 점이 불편했다.
플레이 타임은 대략 5~6시간 정도인 작품이다.

오랜만에 재미나게 플레이한 무섭지 않으면서도 오싹한 공포 게임 'SCP Secret Files'이다.
SCP 게임들중에 이 게임이 제일 신박하네요ㄷㄷ
