‘신비한 돌’을 둘러싼 호텔 소울즈의 오싹한 비밀

항상 취향에 맞는 게임은 예상치 못한 순간에 찾아온다. 너무 긴 플레이타임은 부담스럽고, 컨트롤 피지컬이 중요한 게임도 자신 없는 나에게 ‘호텔소울즈’는 귀여운 일러스트와 흥미로운 스토리, 막히지 않는 전개와 적절한 난이도까지 모든 부분에서 내 취향에 맞는 게임이다.
첫 등장부터 압도적인 분위기를 자랑하는 호텔 소울즈
스토리 몰입에 방해되지 않는 안정적인 난이도
추리를 통해 난관을 풀어나가며 진행하는 이 게임은, 끝까지 적절한 난이도로 재미를 유지하였으며, 주변 환경을 살피는 방식의 구성에서 게임 속 힌트들을 놓치게 되는 상황을 막기 위해, 주인공과 등장인물들이 건네주는 힌트와 이벤트를 모두 실행하지 않으면 다음 날로 넘어갈 수 없게 설계된 친절함이 있다. 더해 힌트들도 너무 광범위하지 않고 적절한 수준을 유지하여 끝까지 막힘 없도록 게임을 플레이 할 수 있게 해주었고, 특히 퍼즐에만 치우쳐져 있지 않은 밸런스가 즐거운 기분을 유지하도록 도와준다.
조작은 플레이어의 이동과 커서를 별도로 움직여야 하는 부분에서 PC에 최적화된 인상이다. 나는 닌텐도 스위치로 플레이를 하였기에 플레이어의 이동과 커서를 양쪽의 엄지 스틱으로 컨트롤해야 했는데, 진행하다 보니 익숙해졌지만, 처음의 어색함에 약간의 적응 시간이 필요했다. 물론 캐릭터가 움직이면서 커서가 같이 움직이기에 커서를 캐릭터에 붙이면 어느 정도 고전 RPG 게임의 기분으로 진행이 가능하다.
쁘띠호러를 증명하는 일러스트와 연출
귀엽고 으스스한 느낌을 주는 배경음악은 이미 시작하기 전부터 게임 분위기에 자연스럽게 스며들 수 있도록 도와주며, 배경을 제외한 흑백의 일러스트와 밝은 파스텔 톤 배경의 조합은 오래된 호텔 느낌에 몽환적인 분위기까지 느끼게 하여 더욱 게임에 빠져들게 하는 매력이 있다. 이러한 이유인지 게임을 끝내고 나면 기묘하면서도 아련한 꿈을 꾼 느낌이 들기도 한다. 개발진이 표현한 쁘띠호러라는 말에 동의한다.
공포감을 열심히 순화시켜주는 등장인물들의 덩어리진 모습이 귀엽다
플레이어는 게임 속 주인공인 약학자로 스토리가 시작된다. 오래된 신문을 읽고 '신비한 돌'의 존재를 알게 된 후, 돌이 자신의 연구에 큰 빛을 보게 해주리라는 확신을 하고 돌이 발견된 소울즈 라는 마을로 향하게 되며, 돌을 구한 뒤 근처에 있는 낡은 호텔에서 숙박하게 되는데 곧 주인공이 어렵사리 구한 소중한 돌이 호텔 안에 사라지면서 사건들이 발생한다.
호텔 구석구석에서 발견되는 연구가 A 씨가 남긴 쪽지들을 읽으면서 상황을 추리하다 보면 ‘그것’이 무엇인지, 호텔 직원들이 무엇을 숨기고 있는지 궁금증이 이어져 게임을 멈출 수 없었다.

소소하고 확실한 귀여움을 선사해주는 오브젝트들
게임의 유머 코드도 웃음을 유발한다. 게임 속 주인공을 포함하여 등장하는 주요 등장인물들과 바닥에 놓여있는 토마토들까지, 단순한 덩어리 모양들이 각자의 성격대로 개성 있는 생김새를 띄고 있는 것이 재미 요소이며, 스토리를 풀어나감에 있어 크게 기여하지 않는 오브젝트들도 말을 걸어보면 재미있는 대사가 있다.

마냥 귀여워 보이면서도 어딘가 나사 빠지고 이상한 등장인물들과 정들어버린다
등장인물들과 대화는 재미있는 이야기 속에 인간미와 친근함이 느껴진다. 그들은 많은 것을 숨기고 있는 것 같지만 그들의 감정과 성격이 대화를 통해 투명하게 드러나기 때문이다. 특히 흥미롭게 느꼈던 부분은 책장들을 클릭할 때마다 책장 속에 있는 책 내용이 랜덤하게 나오는데, 그 내용이 게임의 스토리에 관여하지는 않지만 굉장히 흥미로웠으며, 개발팀에서 작은 부분들도 세심히 신경 써서 디자인한 것이 느껴져 더 재미있게 플레이하며 빠져들 수 있었다. (책장 속 내용은 텀블벅 후원자들이 제출한 내용이라고 한다) 이로 인해 나중에는 이것도 뭔가 재미있는 부분이 있지 않을까 하는 의심으로 모두 눌러보게 된다. 더해 플레이 중간중간 등장하는 미니게임들도 스토리와는 관계없으나, 게임의 볼륨을 더욱 풍부하게 만드는 역할을 한다.

책장의 모든 문구가 이처럼 귀엽고 오묘해서 창의력이 길러지는 기분이 든다

귀여운 모습으로 슬픈 말을 덤덤하게 하는 어린아이는 인상적이다
게임은 5일이라는 정해진 시간 동안 사건을 해결해야 하지만, 시간이 실시간으로 흘러가는 것은 아니니 주어진 이벤트들과 오브젝트들을 모두 확인해보며 천천히 플레이해도 좋다. 오히려 이 방법이 훨씬 호텔 소울즈를 즐기는 방법이라고 생각한다.
제대로 즐기려면 모든 엔딩을 보자
호텔 소울즈 안에서의 몽환적인 체험이 3시간에 가까울 무렵이면 하나의 엔딩을 볼 수 있다. 이 게임은 엔딩이 여러 개로 나뉘는데, 게임 마지막 부분에서 나의 선택으로 어떤 엔딩이 나올지 정해진다. 물론 엔딩을 모두 보는 것이 게임을 완벽히 해석하고 즐길 수 있다. 그렇기 때문에 나는 모든 엔딩을 보고 싶었고, 총 몇 시간에 걸쳐 모든 결말을 확인하고 전말을 알게 되었을 때의 후유증은 생각보다 길었다. 한가지의 엔딩만 보기에는 플레이타임이 짧다고 느낄 수 있으나 여러 가지의 엔딩을 보고 나면 속이 꽉 찬 미스터리 영화를 한 편 본듯한 몰입도를 주는 것도 이 게임의 장점이다.

다양한 도전과제들의 숨겨진 귀여움
호텔 소울즈에는 특히나 도전과제들이 상당히 귀엽다. 플레이 도중 나타나는 도전과제 달성 알림은 또 하나의 즐거움이었으며, 달성 조건들과 과제 이름들이 상당히 귀여우니 39가지의 엉뚱하고 기묘한 도전과제들을 경험하는 것도 즐거움이다.

이 게임은 시각 디자인과 두 명으로 구성된 개발팀이 크라우드 펀딩을 통해 제작된 게임이다. 크라우드 펀딩의 성격상 첫 타이틀은 차기작의 펀딩에서도 큰 영향을 미치는 만큼, 신뢰에 직결되는 타이틀이며, 이 타이틀은 차기작의 신뢰를 받을 가치가 있다.

‘호텔 소울즈’는 대학생 두 명의 톡톡 튀는 아이디어들이 쌓여 만들어진 신선하고 눈과 귀가 즐거운 독특한 인디게임이다. 호텔의 비밀을 파헤치고 진실을 알게 되는 순간들 속에서도 결말까지 궁금증과 몰입도가 깨지지 않는다는 점에서 높은 완성도를 보여준다. 하지만 이 게임의 진정한 장점은 개발자들이 애정을 가지고 즐기며 제작한 것이 사소한 것에서부터 느껴지는 부분이며, 그것이 내가 플레이하는 데 있어 제일 큰 즐거움이었다.
