킵 아웃(Keep Out)은 2044년이라는 가상의 먼 미래를 배경으로 장난감들의 군주인 Mr. M을 조종해 흉악한 인간들과 난폭한 장난감들로부터 탈출하고 장난감들의 이상향에 도달해야 하는 횡스크롤 방식의 퍼즐 플랫포머 게임이다. 작은 장난감의 시야를 반영한 듯한 특유의 3D 그래픽과 음산한 느낌의 음악으로 공포 분위기를 적절히 묘사하고 있으며, 각 구역에 도달할 때마다 오브젝트를 활용해 앞으로 나아가는 게임플레이는 무난한 레벨 디자인과 재미를 선보인다. 한편 약 반년 전 스팀에 처음 게임을 출시했을 당시 버그가 잦다는 평가가 발견되는데, 본인이 게임을 플레이했을 땐 게임 진행에 크게 문제가 될 만한 버그는 발견되지 않았다. 다만 그래픽 옵션을 세밀하게 조절하지 않으면 프레임이 떨어지고 게임 화면이 끊겨 최적화가 조금 아쉽게 다가온다.

킵 아웃의 퍼즐과 플랫포밍은 대체로 단순하면서도 간결하게 디자인돼있는 모습이다. 대부분의 구간은 대체로 동선이 짧고 간결한 데다가 배치된 오브젝트의 수도 많지 않아 조금만 궁리해보면 해결 방법을 알아챌 수 있을 만큼 퍼즐의 난이도는 쉬운 편이다. 게임의 조작법이 오로지 키보드를 기준으로 설명이 돼있기도 하고 전반적으로 조작법에 대한 설명이 부족해 처음 게임을 접할 땐 조금 헤맬 수 있긴 하지만, 퍼즐 자체의 난이도가 크게 어렵지 않아 오래 헤매는 일 없이 부드럽게 게임을 이어나갈 수 있다. 중간중간 예상하지 못한 지점에 갑자기 튀어나오는 함정이 조금 당황스러울 수 있겠지만, 이는 공포 게임 특유의 분위기 조성과 더불어 상황에 대한 해결책을 강구하는 재미를 의도한 것으로 보인다.
다만 특정 구간의 퍼즐 디자인과 난이도 조절에서 조금 아쉬움이 남는데, 이를테면 수중 구간의 경우 갑작스레 동선이 넓게 형성되는 데다가 해결 방법이 바로 눈에 띄지 않아 필요 이상으로 오래 헤맬 여지가 다분하다. 그리고 최후반부의 손을 피해야 하는 구간은 주인공인 장난감 군주를 위협하는 손의 움직임이 워낙 현란해 파해가 까다로운 데다가 이 구간에서 급격히 프레임이 떨어지는 최적화 이슈가 크게 두드러져 유독 이 구간에서 난이도가 급격히 상승한다.
퍼즐의 디자인은 대체로 단순하면서도 간결한 편
이래서 한 번 박힌 딱지는 그 때 그 때 떼내야 하는 거다.
다만 수중 구간은 해결책이 좀 이상하고 움직이는 타이밍도 빡세다.
장난감 군주의 처절한 도망을 담은 킵 아웃의 스토리는 앞서 언급한 앞뒤 퍼즐 간의 자연스러운 연결과 더불어 특유의 임팩트 있는 공포 연출로 괜찮은 몰입도를 보유하고 있다. 이를테면 예상치 못한 타이밍에 갑작스레 튀어나와 장난감 군주를 습격하는 함정이나 거대한 장난감 등의 존재는 플레이어를 놀래키는 데 충분하며, 인간들의 발걸음 소리나 여러 잡음을 통해 공포 분위기와 더불어 일정 수준 이상의 긴장감을 조성한다. 이렇듯 공포 게임에 반드시 필요한 요소들을 적절히 활용해 완급 조절이 적절히 이루어지고 있어 플레이어의 입장에서는 게임의 흐름이 끊기는 일 없이 부드럽게 게임을 이어나가게 된다.
이렇듯 스토리의 몰입감은 좋지만, 스토리에 대한 자세한 서술은 다소 모호한 방향으로 이루어진다. 게임 소개에 적힌 내용에 따르면 킵 아웃의 스토리는 가상의 먼 미래인 2044년을 배경으로 적대적인 장난감과 인간들의 손아귀에서 벗어나 장난감 세상을 구제하는 과정을 담고 있다고 하는데, 실제 게임 상에 이에 대한 서술이나 묘사가 뚜렷이 드러나지 않는다. 여기에 결말의 내용 또한 다소 이해하기 어려운 방향으로 흘러간다. 텍스트가 존재하지 않는 게임이니만큼, 게임 상의 배경과 오브젝트를 통해 게임의 설정과 스토리의 전개를 뚜렷이 드러냈더라면 어땠을가 하는 아쉬움이 남는다.
공포 게임에 필요한 갑작스런 연출과 긴장감 조성은 그럭저럭 괜찮다.
2044년이라는 배경과 장난감 군주라는 역할을 좀 더 부각시켰더라면 좋았을텐데,
그래서 이 로봇들은 원래 인간이었던 것일까, 아니면 그저 인간 흉내를 내던 로봇이었을까,
대략 1시간에서 1시간 반 정도면 무난히 엔딩을 볼 수 있는 데다가 도전과제를 감안해도 2시간 남짓이면 전부 즐길 수 있을 만큼 플레이타임은 짧은 편이고, 메인 화면에 별도의 메뉴로 준비된 에필로그는 스팀 출시 날짜 기준으로 반 년이 넘게 흘렀음에도 불구하고 아직 추가되지 않아 컨텐츠의 볼륨도 살짝 부족하게 다가온다. 그래도 단순하면서도 간결한 퍼즐과 특유의 세계관 및 임팩트 있는 공포 연출로 나름 준수한 완성도를 보유한 퍼즐 플랫포머 게임이고, 최적화 문제나 특정 구간의 난이도 문제를 제외하면 무난히 게임을 즐길 수 있을 것이다. 인사이드(Inside)나 리틀 나이트메어(Little Nightmares) 시리즈 같은 공포 분위기의 플랫포머 게임을 찾는 이들에게 무난히 제시할 수 있는 괜찮은 국산 인디 게임이라 할 수 있겠다.
