저는 지난 5년 이상 게임하는 데 많은 시간을 보냈습니다. 모든 적들에게 가장 강력한 무기인... 카드를 사용해서 말이다. 내가 가장 좋아하는 카드 배틀 게임 두 가지는 파에리아와 슬레이 더 스파이어였다. 하지만 로그북을 만나고 나서, 그 두 개의 세계가 충돌하는 것 같았다. 좀 더 정확히 말하자면, 개발자인 Abrakam은 파에리아의 세계관을 를 덱빌딩 장르로 끌어들였고, 슬레이 더 스파이어에 (말 그대로) 이야기책 같은 요소를 더욱 가미했다. 로그북은 이 두 게임들만큼 깊은 게임플레이의 경지에 도달하지는 못하지만, 독창적인 듀얼 히어로 배틀 시스템, 멋진 연출부터 파에리아의 설정집 속에 들어가는 것만 같은 복잡한 오버월드에 이르기까지 많은 것을 제공한다.
책 속에서 길을 잃다
로그북의 가장 독창적인 포인트 중 하나는 오버월드 탐험 요소다. 지도를 처음 켜면 커다란 빈 양피지만 보이지만, 붓과 잉크를 사용하면 각 타일에 무엇이 있는지 확인할 수 있다. 그림을 그리면서 더 많은 카드를 만들고, 기존에 있던 카드를 변환하고, 전투 중 에너지 비축량을 늘릴 수 있는 기회를 얻게 된다. 각 챕터의 상점에서 사용할 수 있는 골드를 발견하거나, 전체 게임 플레이에 영향을 줄 수 있는 유물을 수집할 수도 있다. 뿐만 아니라, 수많은 이벤트를 겪거나 신화 속의 생물들을 우연히 만날 수도 있다. 이렇듯 게임은 플레이어로 하여금 잉크를 가장 잘 모으고 사용하는 방법을 고민하게 하고, 이를 통해 오버월드 탐험에 흡입력을 더한다.
적과의 인카운터는 지금까지의 카드, 능력, 버프 등을 시험해 볼 수 있는 기회다 - 당신의 전략은 얼마나 유효할까? 당신은 두 명의 영웅을 최대한 활용하고 있는 걸까? 한 번에 여러 적을 상대할까, 아니면 디버프나 상태 스킬로 하나하나 무찌를까? 끊임없이 힘을 키우는 적을 쓰러뜨릴 수 있을 만큼 당신의 덱은 강력할까? 스크린 상단에 유물과 특성이 쌓여 갈수록 고려해야 할 점도 많아진다. 이러한 특전들은 기본적으로 당시닝 어떤 카드를 선택해 나갈지, 어떤 전투 전략을 사용할지 영향을 주기 때문이다.
예를 들어 단단한 조개껍데기 유물을 가지고 있다면, 조개껍데기는 그것을 장비한 영웅이 데미지를 입을 때마다 5의 방어도를 제공한다. 만약 상대하고 있는 적이 약한 데미지로 여러 번 때리는 적이라면, 조개껍데기를 장비한 영웅을 앞으로 나오게 해 데미지를 막아야 할 것이다. 유물로 방어에서 우위를 점하고 나면, 해당 턴에 공격에 더 집중하거나 동료를 강화하는 등 이득을 볼 수 있다. 만약 이그누스의 불꽃이라는 유물이 있다면, 카드로 에너지를 얻을 때마다 추가 에너지 구체를 얻게 되는데, 이렇게 되면 에너지를 주는 카드, 에너지를 많이 사용하는 카드, 그리고 드로우를 볼 수 있는 카드 등을 적극적으로 덱에 넣어야 최대한 이득을 볼 수 있을 것이다.
로그북에는 "젬 시스템" 이 있어, 당신의 덱 안에 있는 카드들을 바꿀 수도 있다. 카드의 코스트를 줄이거나, 드로우 양을 늘리거나 특정 카드를 언제나 첫 패에 들고 시작할 수도 있다. 이런 젬 시스템을 잘 활용하면 당신이 가진 덱의 파워를 몇 배는 효율적으로 사용할 수 있고, 이런 식으로 각 빌드에 따른 시너지를 찾는 것은 아주 재미있었다.
여기 갔다 저기 갔다
로그북의 턴 기반 전투 시스템에는 많은 층위가 있다. 슬레이 더 스파이어처럼 카드를 쓰기 위해서는 에너지가 필요하고, 공격 카드를 쓸 때는 적에게 드래그해서 사용하며, 항상 들어올 데미지에 대비해 방어도를 챙겨야 한다. 그러나 특별한 점은 전장에 동료들을 배치할 수 있다는 점이다. 동료들은 손에 카드를 돌려주거나 영웅들의 위치를 바꾸는 등 특수한 능력을 가지고 있기도 하고, 단순히 매 턴마다 적에게 데미지를 주기도 한다.
그러나 내가 가장 인상적이라고 느꼈던 요소는 바로 두 영웅의 위치 이동 시스템이었다. 게임 속 많은 카드에는 두 영웅의 배치를 바꾸는 등 배치에 관련된 기능이 들어 있는 경우가 많다. 예를 들어, 샤라의 방어 카드를 쓰면 그녀는 앞으로 이동한다. 돌격 카드도 똑같은 기능을 하며, 후퇴 카드는 영웅을 뒤로 보낸다. 특정 포지션에 타겟팅된 디버프나 효과를 피하기 위해 영웅을 이동시킬 수도 있고, 특정 영웅으로 턴을 끝내 데미지를 최소화하는 등 이런 위치 변경에는 다양한 전략 요소가 들어 있다.
내가 가장 인상적이라고 느꼈던 요소는 바로 두 영웅의 위치 이동 시스템이었다.
어떤 영웅들은 특정한 위치를 잘 사용하기도 한다. 예를 들어, 샤라는 앞에 있을 때 공격에 보너스를 받지만, 세이퍼와 같이 사용하면 세이퍼를 앞에 두고 턴을 넘기는 것이 더 좋은 선택이 된다. 세이퍼의 체력이 더 높을 뿐만 아니라, 데미지를 받으면 분노 게이지에 적립되어 카드를 더 강력하게 사용할 수 있기 때문이다.
이런 식으로 영웅의 위치를 이동하면 자원 면에서도 큰 이점을 누릴 수 있다. 예를 들어, 근접 공격 카드는 앞에 있는 영웅이 사용할 때 코스트가 1 적게 드는 반면, 원거리 공격 카드는 뒤쪽에서 사용할 때 코스트가 더 낮다. 이런 식으로 코스트를 절감하거나 콤보 등에 주의를 기울이면 당신의 턴을 최대한 활용할 수 있다.
다양한 영웅들
각각의 영웅들은 장점과 약점, 그리고 고유한 특성을 가지고 있다. 예를 들어, 샤라는 코스트가 소모되지 않는 주문인 단검을 생성할 수 있다. 또 샤라는 강력한 단일 타겟 공격 카드를 많이 가지고 있어 적에게 지속적인 출혈을 일으킬 수도 있다. 한편, 소로코의 카드는 일반적으로 조금 더 비싸지만 더 큰 타격을 입힌다. 소로코는 AOE에 더 집중하고, 영웅의 파워를 높이고, 블록을 생성하며, 때로는 그것을 데미지로 변환하기도 한다.
위에서 언급했듯이 세이퍼는 분노 게이지를 가지고 있고, 분노 효과를 가지고 있거나 효과를 높여 주는 카드들도 있다. 체력을 희생하거나 체력을 다시 채워 주는 식이다. 또 세이퍼는 공격력이 강한 동료들을 배치하거나 그들의 공격력을 높여 줄 수도 있고... 동료들을 희생시켜 스스로의 몸을 지킬 수도 있다.
마지막 영웅은 낮은 체력을 가지고 개구리를 소환하는 마법사 거북이 오로라인데, 이 개구리 소환수들은 서로 쌓여 한 마리의 거대하고 강력한 동료 유닛이 된다. 오로라의 카드 대부분은 체력을 대가로 사용하거나 양날의 검과 같은 역할을 한다. "한 모금" 은 그런 카드 중 하나인데, 오로라가 데미지를 입은 상태라면 4의 체력을 회복하고 그렇지 않다면 적에게 4의 피해를 주는 식이다. "한 모금" 은 지원 카드를 사용할 때 생성되며, 오로라에게는 드로우 수단이 아주 많다.
서로 다른 종류의 카드로 강력한 덱을 만드는 것은 꽤 재미있지만, 로그북의 영웅들 자체는 시스템적으로 그다지 흥미롭지는 않다. 예를 들어, "슬레이 더 스파이어"의 "디펙트" 가 가진 오브 시스템에 홀딱 빠졌던 것처럼 세이퍼의 분노 시스템에 흥미를 갖게 되지는 않았다. 로그북의 장점은 영웅 하나하나에서 온다기보다는 게임 전반에서 오는 것에 가깝다. 또한, 한 번에 두 영웅을 사용한다는 것 자체가 전략의 범위를 크게 제한하는 느낌이다.
특정 시점에서 새로운 능력을 해금할 수 있는 등 덱에 카드가 많은 경우에도 보상을 받게 되는데, 이것이 마냥 좋다고 하기만은 어렵다. 이런 스타일의 게임이라면 카드를 많이 뽑을수록 전략이 위축될 수밖에 없다. 덱의 크기를 결정하는 것은 각 플레이를 밀고 당기는 흥미로운 일이지만, 덱을 크게 만들면 큰 보상이 따라온다고 해서 로그북이 더 재미있는 게임이 되는 것은 아니다.
한 번에 두 영웅을 사용한다는 것 자체가 전략의 범위를 크게 제한하는 느낌이다.
회차 플레이와 방
1회차를 클리어하고 나면 새 게임+ 가 열린다. 이 에필로그는 15단계의 난이도로 구성되어 있으며, 게임플레이에 크게 영향을 주는 여러 요소를 플레이어가 해금하고 직접 설정할 수 있다. 예를 들면, 당신의 주 영웅이 카드를 쓸 때마다 데미지를 입는다거나, 뒤쪽 영웅은 항상 은신 상태로 시작한다거나. 이것은 제법 흥미로운 접근이지만, 플레이하는 입장에서는 이런 변경 요소들이 솔직히 그냥 한 번에 다 해금되었으면 하는 생각이 들었다.
에필로그에서 더 높은 레벨을 클리어할수록 더 많은 페이지를 보상으로 받게 되며, 이는 시작 체력을 늘리거나, 맵의 에너지 우물을 늘리거나 레어 카드 드롭 확률을 높이는 등 메타적인 게임 업그레이드에 사용할 수 있다. 대부분의 경우, 이러한 업그레이드를 통해 향후 플레이에서 보다 강력한 힘을 발휘할 수 있다. 그러나 일부 옵션을 해제하기 전에 다시 한 번 생각해 보는 것이 좋다. 예를 들어, 스타터 덱의 카드를 임의로 만드는 것은 확실히 높은 잠재력이 있지만, 당신에게 불리해질 수도 있다. 초기 게임에서 충분히 신뢰할 수 있는 바닐라 덱으로 시작하고, 시간이 지나면서 약한 카드를 변형시키면서 쌓는 것이 더 안전할 것이다.
새 게임+는 상당한 양의 엔드게임 요소를 담고 있지만, 그 이상으로 로그북에 뭔가가 없다는 것은 아쉬운 일이다. 일일 챌린지나 내가 직접 스타터 덱, 유물, 능력을 짜 도전하는 커스텀 런 같은 입가심 요소가 들어 있었다면 훨씬 좋았을 것 같다.
또한 로그북에는 몇 가지 자잘한 문제가 있다. 게임을 플레이하면서 몇 가지 자잘한 버그를 경험했는데, 카드들이 제대로 작동하지 않거나 영웅 중 하나의 스타팅 유물이 그냥 사라져 버리거나 하는 문제가 있었다. 중간에는 클라우드 세이브에 문제가 생겨 몇 시간동안 플레이한 기록을 잃어버리기도 했다. 다행히도 그 이후 로그북은 이미 두어 번의 대규모 패치를 거쳤으니, 적어도 좋은 방향으로 개선되고 있는 것 같다.
결론
로그북의 포지션을 사용한 게임플레이는 정말 재미있는 전투 퍼즐을 만들어 주지만, 두 영웅 시스템의 단점은 장르 특유의 깊은 전략을 사용하기 힘들게 만든다는 점이다. 온갖 기발한 방법으로 영웅의 능력을 결합하는 것은 즐거웠지만, 날것의 느낌보다는 하나하나 맞춤형으로 이미 제작된 전략을 사용하는 것 같다는 느낌이 들어 엄청나게 매력적이지는 않았다. 그럼에도 불구하고 로그북은 덱빌딩 장르에 대한 흥미로운 접근이며, 새로운 아이디어와 사랑스럽게 실현된 세계로 가득한, 한 번 플레이해봄직한 게임이다.
