So its not simply about that one picture, thats why i don't understand the action. I personally don't really care, I don't plan to use Nine's lobby pic and I am not using Serenei's lobby pick either (I use Cizuru, that one is tasteful), I'd be ashamed is someone accidently saw my screen with that kind of pictures on it. I would understand if you changed all the lobby pictures, but why only this one specifically?

여기는 우주 등대 벤토호. 칼 함바는 홀로 벤토호에서 별들의 방사능을 측정하고 도마뱀을 키우며 생계를 이어나가는 우주비행사다. 홀로 등대를 지키는 칼 함바의 유일한 말동무는 인공지능 고키. 칼은 AI를 상대로 좀처럼 이기기 힘든 체스를 두고, 오줌을 정화한 물로 커피를 마시면서 지루하고 고독한 나날을 견뎌낸다.
낮에는 지구에서 가져온 유물 같은 물건들을 살펴보고, AI와 떠들기도 한다. 칼에게 공허함은 친구처럼 익숙하지만, 밤마다 악몽을 꾼다. 그는 잠들기 위해 INS-4라는 정체불명의 수면제를 맞아야 한다. 약을 맞아도 통 달게 잠드는 일이 없다. 꿈에는 결별한 아내와 딸이 등장했다가, 또 정체불명의 악마를 마주한다. 산소 누출 사고로 잠에서 깨는 날도 있다.
그러던 어느 날, 정체불명의 존재로부터 무전이 온다. 도와달라는 미지의 목소리. 요청에 응한 칼은 조난 상황에서도 '무중력 상태에서 춤추기'를 좋아한다는 엘의 목소리를 들으면서 잃어버린 딸 에쉬를 떠올린다. 칼은 그녀를 구하기 위해 꾀를 내어 다른 길을 가던 우주선을 보내보지만, 엘이 불러준 좌표엔 아무것도 없다. 도대체 칼과 엘 사이에 무슨 일이 벌어진 걸까?

<스틸 데어>는 우주를 배경으로 한 1인칭 퍼즐이다. 2019년 스팀 출시 당시 적잖은 반향을 일으켰으나, 한국은 언어의 장벽 탓에 그 반향에 동참하지 못했다. <스틸 데어>에서는 콕핏에 앉아 모뎀 엔지니어링이나 신호 교신을 주고받아야 한다.
일반적인 영어 실력을 갖춘 게이머라고 하더라도 장황한 설명서를 이해하고 보드에서 여러 조작을 수행하면서, 곳곳에 배치된 블랙유머를 제대로 이해하기는 쉽지 않았다. 2021년, 스마일게이트는 게임의 한국어 번역을 진행, 스토브에 단독 한국어 버전을 내놓으면서 한국 게이머들도 문제없이 <스틸 데어>를 즐길 수 있게 됐다.
<스틸 데어>를 플레이하면서 최근 10년간 인상 깊은 성과를 거둔 우주 영화가 연상된다. "펑크는 죽지 않는다"는 태도나 침대 옆 휴지와 같은 각종 기물을 터치했을 때 등장하는 "코만 푼다"와 같은 농담에서는 <마션>의 유쾌함이, 서로를 위로하면서 생존의 길을 찾는 칼과 엘의 무전에는 <그래비티> 속 코왈스키와 스톤의 대화가, 아버지의 가족을 향한 끝없는 사랑에서는 <인터스텔라>가 떠오른다.
그러면서도 게임 속 퍼즐의 난이도는 '하드 SF' 급이었다. <스틸 데어>의 퍼즐은 어둡고 광활한 미지에서 벌어지는 시공간의 균열처럼 이해하기 어렵다. 문제가 무엇인지 알아야 풀 수 있는데, 도저히 풀 수가 없다. 나는 2차 방정식을 배우러 왔는데, 문제지에는 '다항함수의 미적분'이라고 적혀있는 느낌? 엘을 구하고 사건의 진실을 알아보려고 애를 써도 소용이 없다.
답은 오직 하나. 문제집을 열심히 공부하는 수밖에 없다. <스틸 데어> 콕핏에는 최소 14페이지 분량의 불친절한 매뉴얼이 있다. 각종 상황에 맞춰서 버튼을 누르고 톤을 조정하고 전압을 제어하고, 산소 농도를 조정해야 하는데 그 모든 플레이팁이 달랑 설명서 하나에 정리되어있는 것이다. 팝업이 나타나서 "여기선 이렇게 하세요" 한다든지 "너무 어려우면 스킵할까요?" 물어보지도 않는다.
<스틸 데어>의 유일한 공략집

몇몇 상황에서 고키에게 도움이 될 만한 조언을 들을 수는 있다. 그런데 그때마다 이 자식이 "이것도 모르냐"며 약을 올린다. <2001 스페이스 오딧세이>처럼 확 코드를 뽑아버리고 싶을 지경이다. (게임에는 HAL의 명대사 'I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that'에 대한 오마주가 등장하는 듯한데, 한국어 버전으로만 체험해봤기 때문에 확신할 수는 없다)
이 정도면 아주 젠틀하게 알려주는 상황이다.

키보드를 연주해서 교신을 위한 파동을 맞춘다는 기믹이 들어있다.
정리하자면 <스틸데어>는 이야기와 연출은 상당히 긴장감 있게 설계된 가운데, 퍼즐의 재미는 물론 이야기의 재미까지 쏠쏠히 갖춘 수작이다. 퍼즐의 양이 적거나, 잡담이 너무 많아서 늘어지지 않고 균형감 있게 배치됐다.
각종 사건·사고에 대처하기는 굉장히 어려운 편이었지만, 해결했을 때 만족감이 높았다. 뒤에 따라붙는 이야기를 보기 위해서라도 퍼즐을 무조건 풀어야 하는 상황이 매 시퀀스에서 일어났다. 뒤늦게라도 한국에 소개되어 다행이다.
<스틸 데어>는 멀티엔딩 게임이 아니지만, 퍼즐의 난이도가 상당하다는 점에서 플레이타임을 직관적으로 산출하기 어렵다. 퍼즐 풀이에 자신 있는 게이머라면 10시간 안쪽으로 엔딩을 볼 수 있을까? 참고로 기자의 두뇌로는 퍼즐을 쉽게 만들어주는 '간소화' 기능을 사용하지 않을 수 없었다. 하지만 장담하건대, 간소화된 퍼즐도 결코 쉽지 않다. 분명 영어였다면 할 수 없었을 게임이다.
게임의 결말은 아름답고 감동적이다. 우주에서 칼이 마주하게 될 진실은 무엇일까? 엘은 무사히 구조될 수 있을까? 칼은 잃어버린 딸을 다시 만날 수 있을까? 직접 확인해보시라.
