고로고아의 우아한 단순함은 그 짧지만 보람찬 여정을 가로지른다.

나는 여태까지 고로고아 같은 퍼즐 게임은 한 번도 플레이해보지 않았다. 고로고아는 고요하면서도 성찰적이다. 드래그 앤 드롭이 가능한 4개의 패널은 한 땀 한 땀 손그림으로 그려진 아름답고 꿈결 같은 세계를 비추는 작은 창문의 역할을 한다. 게임을 진행하며 패널을 스크롤하고, 쌓고, 확대하고 축소하면서, 각각의 상자 안에 있는 세계들이 단순히 그 안에 갇혀 있기에는 너무나도 광활하며 매혹적임을 느끼게 될 것이다. 아주 정적인 장면조차도 생명으로 흘러넘친다. 패널들을 재배치하면 그것들은 아주 흥미로운 방식으로 서로 합쳐지거나 조화를 이루면서, 황홀한 이중적 본질(신비롭고, 슬프고, 약간 무섭기도 한)을 드러내는 새로운 상호 관계를 창조해낸다.
이 덧없는 이야기는 총 두 시간도 채 되지 않지만, 이 게임의 모호하면서도 흡입력 있는 스토리, 그리고 아름다우면서도 파괴적인 형태로 발현된 영성에 대한 우아한 통찰은 오랜 시간이 지나도록 플레이어의 마음 속에 여운을 남긴다.
처음에 플레이어에게 제시되는 일련의 이미지들은 마치 난해한 만화책이나 어린 아이들이 읽는 그림책에서 마구잡이로 찢어낸 듯이 서로 무관계해 보인다. 가지에 매달린 사과, 먼지 쌓인 책더미 위의 등불, 나침반, 지도, 사진 등... 이런 이미지들은 때때로 평범하고 단순해 보이기까지 한다.
그러나 두 개의 패널을 넓게 이어 가로로 탁 트인 틀을 만들거나 이미지를 클릭, 혹은 확대하면 완전히 새로운 장면이 나타난다. 파괴된 도시, 잔해에 파묻힌 누더기 장난감, 사원을 덮친 운석을 그린 상형문자 등... 원래의 시야에서 보이지 않던 새로운, 때로는 훨씬 어두운 순간이 플레이어의 눈 앞에 펼쳐진다. 각각의 퍼즐 스테이지들은 모두 매혹적이면서도 이해하기 어렵다. 맥락 없이 흩뿌려진 신비로운 이미지로 구성되어 있어, 마치 꿈 속의 논리로 전개되는 이야기를 보는 것만 같다.
그러나 패널을 탐색하고, 재배열하고 쌓음에 따라(패널 하나에서 레이어를 벗겨내 두 개의 패널을 만든다거나) 서로 관련 없어 보였던 상징, 삽화, 그리고 장면들이 점점 더 놀라운 방식으로 결합되기 시작한다. 수많은 시퀀스들 중 하나에서는 먼 하늘 위에서 빛나는 별을 따와 (말 그대로) 등불 안에 넣어 빛을 밝히기도 한다. 또 다른 시퀀스에서는 고대 유적을 회전시키거나 통로를 쌓아올리고, 도자기 접시의 무늬를 맞춰 거대한 톱니바퀴로 만들어 주인공 캐릭터가 액자에 걸린 여러 장의 사진 속을 드나들 수 있게 한다. 이런 퍼즐의 시간과 공간은 물리 법칙에 얽매이지 않으며, 오래된 것과 새로운 것을 하나의 순간으로 조화시킨다.
주인공은 현재에 변화를 일으키기 위해 먼 과거와 먼 나라로 뻗어나가게 된다. 이런 시스템은 각각의 퍼즐 뒤에 숨어 있는 참신하고 마법적인 작용의 원동력이 되며, 기억과 상실에 대한 씁쓸한 명상의 역할을 하는 영리한 메커니즘이다. 이런 식으로, 주인공이 겪는 모든 여정 속 흥미로운 발걸음들은 동시에 고로고아의 매혹적인 신화를 밝혀내는 과정이기도 하다. 작은 순간들이 모여, 더 거대하고 복잡한 전체를 이루는 것이다.
고로고아는 이미지를 통해 영성, 신화, 역사의 본질과 그들 간의 교차점을 탐구한다.
다른 대부분의 퍼즐 게임처럼, 안타깝게도 고로고아의 참신한 퍼즐 역시 그 원리를 깨닫고 나면 처음 느꼈던 것처럼 흥미롭지 않게 된다. 하지만 고로고아의 모호하면서도 어두운 이야기는 그렇지 않다. 스토리를 이해하기 위해서는 적어도 한 번 이상 플레이할 것을 권장한다. 게임 후반부에 밝혀지는 사실을 알고 나서 다시 처음부터 플레이하면 보이지 않았던 것들이 새롭게 눈에 들어올 것이다.
어떻게 보면 이것이 고로고아라는 게임 최대의, 가장 정교한 퍼즐이라고 할 수 있다. 플레이어는 한 소년이 장엄하고 무시무시한 야수를 위해 과일을 모으는 것을 돕게 되지만, 그 목적이 무엇인지는 알 수 없다. 무너진 도시의 폐허 위에 호화로운 궁전이 우뚝 솟아 있다. 이런 식으로 게임 내에서는 전쟁과 파괴의 이미지, 그리고 거대한 부와 사치의 이미지가 병렬적으로 나타난다.
게임을 플레이하면서 나는 마치 책이나 그림을 감상하듯이 연신 고로고아의 퍼즐에 감탄했다. 세세한 풍경, 어수선한 집들, 고대 유물 등의 이미지들은 시간이 지남에 따라 그저 편리한 플롯 정도가 아니라 생생히 살아 숨쉬는 무언가가 되며 새로운 의미를 가졌다.
고로고아의 퍼즐은 결코 극복해야 할 장애물로 느껴지지 않는다 - 그것들은 모두 이야기를 전달하는 수단이다.
고로고아는 이미지를 통해 영성, 신화, 역사의 본질과 그들 간의 교차점을 탐구한다. 이런 주제들은 흔히 너무 개인적이거나 지저분해질 수 있지만, 고로고아가 이것들을 다루는 방식은 훨씬 고요하고, 우아하다. 고로고아의 세계에서는, 아주 보잘것 없는 존재도 웅장하고 매혹적인 존재의 바로 옆에 나란히 존재한다. 그림자에 가려지거나, 밑에서 우러러보지 않으며 현실의 구성물로서 온전히 존재하는 것이다. 가장 평범한 이미지에서도 화려함을 찾을 수 있다. 이는 평범함을 신비로움과 경이로움으로 만들고, 성스러운 신화를 놀랍도록 친숙한 세계와 연결해 준다.
결론
고로고아는 특유의 우아한 단순함으로 창의적인 슬라이딩 퍼즐과 마법의 세계를 만들어내며, 이는 짧으면서도 보람찬 여정이다. 반복 플레이를 하다 보면 퍼즐을 처음 풀었을 때 느꼈단 쾌감은 점점 흐려지지만, 손으로 직접 그린 아름다운 삽화와 영리한 보상 체계는 몇 번이고 보아도 만족스럽다. 고로고아는 단 한 마디도 하지 않으면서 많은 메시지를 전하며, 이 수수께끼는 플레이어로 하여금 몇 번이고 스토리에 주의를 기울이며 다시 플레이하도록 만든다. 내게 있어 이런 요소는 아주 만족스러웠다.

각각의 다른 그림들로 연계점을 맞춰나가
퍼즐을 맞추는 과정이 굉장히 마음에 들었습니다.
플레이 시간을 좀 짧아서 아쉬웠지만 보는 재미가 엄청난 게임입니다
트레일러 영상에서 보여주는 퀄리티가 굉장히 높아서 흥미가 가네요~
전체적으로 신비로운 분위기를 풍기는게임이네요 퍼즐 장르 별로 안좋아하는데 한번쯤해봐도 될만한 게임인듯
고로고아 스포당하기 싫어서 방송이나 공략 하나도 안 보고 하루만에 집중해서 깼는데, 진짜 영상이나 퍼즐 구성들이 너무 좋아서 돈이 아깝지 않은 게임이었습니다.
