이름부터 심상치 않은 'ALTF4'가 스토브 인디에 출시했다. ALTF4는 목표지점까지 완주하면 되는 아주 단순한 플랫포머이며 커피 한 잔보다 싼 가격으로 자신의 실력에 따라 무한정의 플레이 타임을 자랑하는 게임이다.
ALTF4는 스팀 출시 이후 두 달 만에 2600건의 사용자 평가를 매우 긍정적으로 받을 만큼 높은 평가를 가지고 있다. 부정적인 평가마저 게임이 너무나도 다른 의미로 즐겁게 해줘서 반쯤 장난 식으로 내린 의견이 대다수일 정도로 큰 화제가 되고 있는 게임이다.

게임 속에서 플레이어는 닭을 등짐 멘 플레이트 갑옷을 낀 기사가 되어 모험 아닌 모험을 떠나게 된다. 초반에 뭔가에 쫓기고 있다는 표현이 나오고 왜 쫓기고 있는지 알 수 없으나 이런 류의 게임이 그렇듯 별로 중요한 건 아니다. 어차피 뒤에서 뭔가 다가오진 않는다.
캐릭터는 이동과 점프, 닭 날리기, 레그, 슬라이딩, 자살까지 총 여섯 동작을 할 수 있으며 적절하게 움직여 장애물을 피해 골인 지점까지 돌파해야 한다. 장애물은 맞고 나서 잠깐 경직되며 총 세 대까지 버틸 수 있는 종류와 캐릭터를 멀리 날려보내는 종류가 있는데 당연히 주변을 에워싼 바다에 빠지면 죽기 때문에 멀리 날아가면 십중팔구는 게임오버다.

이렇게 보면 정말 간단해 보이는 게임이나 첫 점프를 하는 순간 어딘가 이상함을 느끼기 시작할 것이다. 나사 빠진듯한 캐릭터, 거리감이 제대로 안 느껴지는 렌더링 방식, 달에 와있는 듯이 붕 뜨는 물리엔진이 합쳐져 분명 갈 수 있다고 생각했는데 안 가지는 경험을 선사해 준다.
안전장치 또한 제한적이다. 주요 포인트마다 세이브 간판이 매달린 풍선이 등장하는 데 풍선을 닭을 던져 맞추고 떨어진 간판 위에 올라서야 세이브가 된다. 문제는 1회용이라는 것, 한 번 되돌아온 뒤에 또 죽으면 맨 처음 지점으로 되돌아가게 되며 세이브 간판 또한 바로 등장하지 않는다.

장애물 또한 정말 맨땅이 아니면 방심할 수 없다. 아무 문제 없을 것 같은 나무 발판이 갑자기 움직이더니 캐릭터를 밀쳐 바다로 다이빙시켜주거나 돼지 떼와 갈치 떼가 튀어나오더니 마찬가지로 뻥 날려준다. 대체 플레이트 갑옷의 무게는 어디로 간 건지 의문이 들 정도로 가볍게 날아가 버린다.
심지어 화면 멀리서 대포가 날라오기도 하며 벽이 다가오는데 투명문이 있어 지나갈 수 없는 패턴, 반대로 누가 봐도 함정같이 보이는데 아무 피해 없이 지나갈 수 있는 곳 등 모르면 당해야 하는 구간이 수두룩하게 나온다.

이처럼 플레이어를 살살 약 올리게 구성되어 있는 ALTF4의 악랄함은 이뿐만이 아니다. 죽고 난 뒤 시작 지역 또는 세이브 지점으로 되돌아오면 상단에 자그마한 도움말이 나오는데 이 중에는 잡담에 가까운 설명이나 아예 대놓고 웃기려고 적은 글이 나온다.
앞뒤 다 떼놓고 해당 글귀만 보면 재치 있는 내용이지만 첫 지역으로 되돌아온 플레이어의 성질을 돋우기엔 충분하다. 여기에 시작 지역에는 왜 여기 있는지는 모르지만 3인조 악단이 음악을 연주하고 있는데 익살스러운 표정으로 세상 평화로운 음악을 연주하고 있는 애들을 보다 보면 괜히 화풀이하고 싶어진다.

이쯤 되면 게임 제목이 왜 ALTF4인지 알게 된다. 윈도우 운영체제 컴퓨터에서 현재 실행 중인 창을 강제로 종료하는 단축키 조합인 ALT+F4에서 따온 만큼 게임 플레이하는 중간중간 해당 단축키를 눌러버리고 싶게 만든다.
그럼에도 게임 플레이를 하는 이유는 어렵지만 일정한 패턴을 학습하고 익혀 도전정신을 발휘해 돌파했을 경우 오는 쾌감을 얻기 위해서일 것이다. 익살스러운 분위기 속에서 자신만의 통과방법을 찾아가는 재미는 말로 표현하기 힘들 정도다.
