도토리스가 개발한 퍼즐 게임 '린, 퍼즐에 그려진 소녀 이야기'가 스토브 인디에 출시했다.
린은 병에 걸린 하나뿐인 동생을 살리기 위해 구미호를 찾아 떠난 소녀가 버려진 책 속으로 빨려 들어가 구미호의 기억을 읽어가는 이야기다. 2014년 모바일 게임으로 출시된 적 있으며 개선된 그래픽과 더 많은 스테이지, PC버전과 함께 다시 돌아왔다.
처음 나왔을 때부터 한 편의 수채화를 보는 듯한 그림체 속에 결코 쉽지 않은 높은 난이도의 퍼즐로 큰 화제가 되었으며 더욱 직관적이면서 담백한 수묵화로 돌아온 린, 과연 어떤 게임인지 플레이해보았다.

■ 어느 장면이든 한 편의 수묵화처럼
린을 플레이할 때 가장 먼저 눈에 들어온 것은 역시 그래픽이었다. 동양 설화인 구미호를 배경으로 하는 게임답게 먹물과 붓으로 그린 듯한 캐릭터와 오브젝트로 이루어져 있다.
또한 모든 퍼즐이 한 화면 안에 담겨 있어 배경과 중앙의 퍼즐 사이에 빈 공간으로 여백의 미까지 갖추고 있어 게임 플레이 중간에 어떤 장면을 캡처해도 한 편의 수묵화를 보는 듯한 완성도를 보여준다. 여기에 배경음악까지 국악의 곡조를 따와 스토리, 캐릭터, 배경까지 한 편의 동양 설화를 감상하는 듯한 느낌을 주고 있다.

■ 도전 욕구 불러일으키는 난이도
린은 각 스테이지별 제한된 공간 안에서 슬라이딩 퍼즐 맞추듯이 오브젝트를 움직여 린을 출구까지 이동하면 되는 간단한 목표를 가지고 있다.
움직일 수 있는 오브젝트는 세 면 또는 두 면이 막혀있는데 오브젝트끼리 맞붙을 때 빈 공간끼리 마주치면 캐릭터가 반대쪽으로 이동한다. 이 방법 외에는 주인공을 움직일 수 있는 수단이 없다.
당연히 방해 요소도 있다. 린과 맞닿으면 게임오버 되는 도깨비, 부적을 얻어야 막힌 벽이 열리는 출구 등 각각의 특징을 생각하며 출구로 향하는 길을 만들어야 하기 때문에 한없이 머리를 싸매고 고민하게 만든다.
제한 시간은 딱히 없으나 정해진 동작 횟수 이내에 클리어할 경우 여우구슬을 추가로 얻을 수 있다. 만약 도저히 답을 찾기 힘들면 힌트를 볼 수 있는데 중간 과정과 이동 횟수를 간접적으로 유추할 수 있는 장면이 담겨 있다. 물론, 힌트 끼리 중간 과정이 생략되어 있어 방향성만 제시해줄 뿐 길을 찾아내는건 오로지 플레이어의 몫이다.

■ 다양한 즐길 거리
린의 메인 스토리를 담당하는 '린 이야기'는 9챕터, 총 90스테이지가 준비되어 있다. 각 스테이지는 열 번 이내 동작으로 해결할 수 있는 간단한 초반부를 지나고 나면 최적의 동작 수가 백 번에 근접할 정도로 길어지기 때문에 모든 스테이지를 클리어하기 위해선 꽤 오랜 시간이 걸린다.
또한 메인 스토리 이외에도 도깨비가 없고 지형도 여러 칸을 차지하는 큼직한 사물을 움직여 길을 내 가볍게 즐길 수 있는 '율서 이야기'와 예전 버전 스토리와 개발진의 코멘트가 담긴 '덤'까지 총 70개 스테이지가 추가로 준비되어 있다.
이 중 덤의 경우 챕터별 요구 여우구슬이 있는데 기존 메인 스토리를 단순히 클리어만 한 수준이라면 마지막 챕터를 열람할 수 없는 수준이 책정되어 있어 나름 수집 요소로도 작동한다.

퍼즐 게임은 풀면서 화가 나야 잘 만든 게임이라는 말이 있다. 그런 면에서 린은 충분히 잘 만들었다 할 수 있다. 물론 단순히 어렵기만 한 퍼즐이라면 좋은 평가를 받지 못했을 것이다.
수묵화를 보는 듯한 정갈한 그래픽과 빠져들게 만드는 사운드, 정답이 하나는 아니지만 최적의 길은 어떻게 움직여야 하는지 조금씩 알려주며 도전 욕구를 일으키는 적절한 배려 등이 합쳐져 어렵지만 계속해보고 싶게 만드는 매력적인 퍼즐 게임을 만들었다.
