우리가 게임을 하는 이유는 많은 것들이 있겠지만 그중 하나는 내가 마음대로 설정한 목표를 충실하게 쌓아올릴 수 있는 것에서 오는 성취감일 것이다. 이를 극대화한 것이 샌드박스 장르의 게임으로 가장 대표적인 게임 '마인크래프트'는 게임 안의 사물을 마음대로 설정해 자신만의 콘텐츠를 만들고 즐길 수 있다.
다만, 이런류의 게임 중 일부분은 무한한 자유도 속에 멀티플레이와 PVP까지 포함되어 있어 혼자 느긋이 게임을 즐기고 싶은 유저들이 접근하기 어려운 경우가 많다. 오늘 소개할 게임인 '트리 오브 라이프 : 오드리아 - 싱글플레이'의 원작도 비슷한 평가를 받고 있었다.
제목에 '싱글플레이'가 포함되어 있는 것에서 알 수 있듯이 이 게임은 멀티플레이가 반강제되는 원작을 재해석한 게임이다. 다만 특이한 점은 원작이 아직 정식으로 출시되지 않았다는 점이다.
원작의 세 번째 알파테스트 버전을 혼자 플레이할 수 있게 이식한 게임. 아직 멀티플레이 모드가 알파 테스트만 거친 만큼 원작대로 다른 사람과 함께 즐기고 싶은 게이머의 눈길까지 끌 수밖에 없는 게임. 전반적인 게임의 시스템을 간략하게 살펴보았다.

■ 일단 살아남아라
정체 모를 섬에서 깨어나는 캐릭터가 게임 안에서 내가 하고 싶은 대로 움직여줄 아바타다. 광활한 섬을 돌아다닐 캐릭터의 최중요 능력치는 총 세 가지로 레벨, 체력, 스태미나, 만복도가 있다.
체력은 단어 그대로 모든 체력이 소모되면 캐릭터가 사망한다. 적의 공격을 받거나 높은 곳에서 추락하면 감소한다. 만복도는 게임을 플레이하는 동안 주기적으로 소모되며 만복도가 모두 소진될 경우 체력이 급속도로 빠지기 시작한다. 체력과 만복도는 각종 음식을 먹으면 서서히 회복할 수 있다.

스태미나는 필드에서 단순 이동을 제외한 빨리 달리기, 수영, 공격, 방어, 구르기, 채집 등 모든 행동을 할 때마다 빠르게 소모된다. 스태미나를 모두 소진할 경우 캐릭터는 잠깐 동안 약간의 이동을 제외하면 아무것도 할 수 없으니 전투 중에 적절하게 스태미나를 배분하지 않으면 적의 공격에 쉽게 노출되니 주의해야 한다.
만약 캐릭터가 사망할 경우 그 자리에 그동안 수집해온 모든 재료 아이템을 떨구게 된다. 부활 후 빠르게 그 자리를 찾아가면 다시 회수할 수는 있지만 부활 지점이 매우 먼 경우가 많으니 조심해야 한다.

■ 온갖 자연 만물이 수집 대상
섬을 돌아다니면서 뭔갈 마주치면 일단 공격해보자. 배경이라 생각할 수 있는 나무, 돌이 매우 중요한 채집 대상이며 동식물도 마찬가지다.
처음 게임을 시작할 때 손에 쥐고 있는 무기가 없지만 괜찮다. 이 게임에서 캐릭터의 주먹은 훌륭한 대화수단이자 해결사다. 타격할 수 있는 물건이라면 뭐든지 균등하게 5의 대미지가 들어간다.
모험을 하다 보면 만나는 적대적인 적들도 넓은 의미에서 보면 수집 대상이다. 다만, 적의 공격이 상당히 매서우니 충분한 무기와 방어구를 장비하지 않았다면 가급적 피해 가는 편이 좋다.

■ 내가 쓸 건 내가 만든다! 제작 시스템
각종 재료 아이템을 모았다면 이젠 아이템을 만들어 낼 시간이다. 초반에는 단순히 불에 고기를 구워 먹거나 나무판자로 방패를 만드는 식의 간단한 제작밖에 할 수 없지만 모험을 하면서 경험이 쌓여가면 철, 미스릴을 재련해 무기를 만들고 고기와 야채를 함께 조리해 맛있는 요리를 만들 수 있다.
다만, 맨손 제작이 가능한 몇 가지를 제외하면 모두 그에 맞는 작업대(모닥불, 방직기, 모루, 용광로 등등)가 필요하며 이 또한 재료 아이템을 써서 필드에 만들어야 한다. 물론, 여러 종류의 작업대를 거쳐야 만들 수 있는 아이템이 대다수이므로 자신이 안전하다고 생각하는 곳에 여러 작업대를 함께 설치해야 제작이 수월하다.

■ 점점 더 강해져 모험 영역을 넓혀가자

숙련도는 맨 처음부터 찍을 수 있는 모험, 단련, 제작, 생활을 제외하면 상하좌우로 연결되어 있는 다른 능력을 습득해야 투자할 수 있는 구조로 이루어져 있다. 당연한 말이지만 점점 레벨을 올리기에 필요한 경험치가 올라가며 서로 반대쪽에 있는 능력을 동시에 얻으려면 매우 높은 레벨을 달성해야 하니 자신이 운영하고자 하는 방향에 맞춰 신중하게 투자해야 한다.

사실 '트리 오브 라이프 : 오드리아'가 완전한 신작은 아니다. 이미 서비스 중인 대규모 멀티 생존 게임 '트리 오브 라이프'의 정식 후속작으로 이름 모를 섬에 불시착한 캐릭터가 목축, 수렵해가며 다른 플레이어와 함께 집, 마을, 성을 짓고 대규모 전투까지 치를 수 있는 등 전반적인 큰 흐름이 같다고 할 수 있다. 세 차례에 걸친 알파 테스트에서 보여준 모습도 멀티플레이와 PVP를 거의 그대로 가져왔다.
