바이페드는 협동 어드벤처 퍼즐게임이다. 유저는 두 발이 달린 로봇 에고와 힐라의 '발'을 움직여 모든 난관을 헤쳐나가면 된다. 단, 2인이 함께할 시에는 대부분의 협동 게임이 그러하듯 우정에 금이 갈 수도 있으니 유의해야 한다. 로컬과 온라인 멀티 모두 지원하고 있다.

■ 바이페드의 비하인드 스토리
바이페드는 텐센트 산하의 개발 스튜디오인 넥스트 스튜디오에서 개발한 게임이다. 넥스트 스튜디오는 최근 전세계 인디 게임 시장에서 남다른 개발력으로 두각을 나타내고 있는 스튜디오로, 중국풍 오보로 무라마사를 표방한 '블레이디드 퓨리', 오밀조밀한 도트 감성의 '데스 커밍', 그리고 빛과 그림자를 활용한 깊이 있는 퍼즐 게임 '아이리스 폴'까지 다양한 감성의 게임을 선보인 바 있다.
넥스트 스튜디오 내에는 400명 정도가 일하고 있고, 약 10개 팀으로 나뉘어 각자 프로젝트를 진행하고 있다. 각 팀별로 11명에서 15명 정도가 배치되어 있으며, 1년에서 1년 반 정도 게임을 개발한다. 스팀에 올리고 나면 팀을 해산하고 새로운 프로젝트를 시작하는 것이 특징이다.
현재 바이페드의 경우 PC를 포함해 PS4와 닌텐도 스위치 버전으로도 출시되어 있다.
■ 게임 주요 특징
조작은 마우스와 키보드, 컨트롤러를 모두 지원한다. 개인적으로는 조이스틱 두 개로 조작할 수 있는 컨트롤러 조작이 조금 더 나은 듯하다. 컨트롤러 미사용 시 마우스 양쪽을 번갈아 클릭하며 바이페드의 발을 이동시켜야 하는데, '이러다가 내 마우스 고장 나겠네'라는 생각이 마구마구 든다. 그냥 딸-깍-딸-깍 수준이 아니라 타다다다닥하며 마우스 양쪽을 번갈아 클릭해야 한다. 컨트롤러가 없다면 어쩔 수 없지만 있다면 마우스의 복지를 위해 조이스틱으로 움직이는 게 나을 수 있다.
게임의 조작은 정말 이 이상 단순할 수 없을 정도로 단순하다. 로봇의 양발로 모든 이동과 퍼즐 해결을 할 수 있다. 즉 양발만 움직일 줄 알면 게임의 100%를 다 할 수 있는 것. 마우스 기준 왼쪽 버튼으로 왼발, 오른쪽 버튼으로 오른발을 움직일 수 있는데, 정말 클릭과 마우스 이동만으로 모든 조작을 할 수 있다. 가장 복잡한 조작이라고 해봐야 마우스 양쪽 버튼을 모두 꾹 누르고 방향을 이동하는 활강 정도다.
퍼즐의 난이도도 어렵지 않아서 그냥 쓱 눈으로 한번 보면 아 이거 이렇게 움직여서 요렇게 이동해서 '짠' 하고 풀면 끝이라는 생각이 들 정도다. 단지 모든 협동 게임이 그러하듯, 게임의 난이도는 '파트너'에게 달려있다. 혼자 2인분을 한다고 해결할 수 있는 게임이 아니기에 비슷한 수준의 게임 실력을 가진 친구와 함께하는 것이 우정을 지키기에도, 플레이 타임을 지키기에도 좋다.
바이페드의 특징이라고도 볼 수 있는데, 퍼즐 해결을 위해서는 두뇌 플레이보다 뛰어난 피지컬이 더 중요시된다. 어떻게 풀어나가야 하나 복잡하게 생각하는 방식이 아니라, 타이밍에 맞춰 두 사람이 함께 움직이거나, 순서대로 이동하거나, 갑자기 방향을 바꾼다거나 하는 식의 컨트롤이 많은 편이기 때문. 그러니 평소 호흡이 잘 맞는다고 생각되는 친구와 함께하면 좀 더 즐겁게 게임을 플레이할 수 있다.
1인 플레이를 진행할 경우 게임 자체가 2인 모드에 비해 훨씬 단순해져 버리는 단점이 있다. 조작이 쉽고 평이하다 보니 생기는 문제점인데, 퍼즐도 쉽고 조작도 쉬워 협동 컨트롤에서 오는 바이페드만의 독특한 느낌을 거의 잃어버리게 된다. 즉, 다른 어드벤처 퍼즐류 게임에 비해 압도적으로 눈에 띄는 재미가 없다. 그냥 양발을 움직여서 이동하고, 활강하다가 점프하거나, 무너지는 돌다리를 건넌다거나 하는 식으로 그냥 평범한 게임이 되어버리는 것.
대신 2인 협동 모드는 정말 그 어떤 협동 게임과 비교해서도 절대 부족하지 않은 편이다. 아니, 오히려 뛰어나게 재미있다. 개인적으로는 로컬 멀티가 정말 이 게임의 장점을 가장 잘 보여준다고 생각하는데, 서로 열심히 이야기하며 타이밍을 맞추고, 퍼즐을 풀어가는 것이 바이페드의 진면모라고도 볼 수 있기 때문이다.
바이페드의 가장 큰 장점으로는 단순한 조작에서 오는 협동의 즐거움도 있겠으나 귀엽고 아기자기한 그래픽과 사운드도 빼놓을 수 없다. 단순하지만 따뜻하고 부담스럽지 않은 색감과 텍스쳐의 배경 그래픽, 그리고 짧은 양발을 열심히 움직이며 돌아다니는 로봇들을 보고 있노라면 자연스럽게 얼굴에 미소가 지어진다.
스테이지는 총 30개가 준비되어 있다. 기본 조작 방식은 동일하지만 인적이 한산한 오랜 유적지, 험준하고 위험해 보이는 빙벽, 거센 물살이 흐르는 협곡과 폭포, 새의 노래 소리와 꽃향기가 가득한 신비한 숲속 등 스테이지 별로 달라지는 지형지물을 이용해 퍼즐을 클리어하는 것도 하나의 재미다. 단, 이런 부분은 2인 모드에서 훨씬 잘 드러나니 꼭 협동 플레이를 해보도록 하자.
■ 게임 주요평가
바이페드는 지난 3월 출시 후 스팀(Steam) 주요 평가 점수에서 2020년 12월까지 총 2,246개의 평가가 이루어졌으며 종합 평가에서 '매우 긍정적'을 받았다. 특히 최근 평가의 경우 '압도적으로 긍정적'일 만큼 유저들의 반응이 좋은 편이다. 협동 플레이에 시간이 가는지 모를 만큼 즐겁다는 평가가 많으며, 플레이타임을 제외하면 모두 만족스럽다는 의견이 많다.

또한 외부에 나갈 수 없는 요즘 모니터 속이나마 지구 곳곳의 아름다운 자연, 빙하나 유적지 협곡과 폭포, 숲 속 등을 따뜻한 색감과 눈길로 볼 수 있다는 것 역시 바이페드의 즐거움 중 하나다. 보고만 있어도 기분 좋아지는 배경, 그 사이로 들려오는 평화로운 사운드, 여기에 귀엽고 아기자기한 로봇들까지, 게임도 하고 힐링도 하고 일석이조의 효과를 얻을 수 있다.
