<나트>는 2020년 7월 31일에 발매된 플랫포머 게임이다. <나트>의 조작 체계는 조금 독특한데, 'SIE 재팬 스튜디오'에서 제작했던 <로코로코>를 생각하면 이해하기 쉽다. 방향키를 눌러 캐릭터를 움직이는 것이 아니라, 화면의 기울기를 조정해 캐릭터가 움직이게 만들어야 한다. 즉 캐릭터는 가만히 있지만, 플레이어가 중력을 임의로 조작해 움직이도록 만든다고 생각하면 된다.
<나트>는 본래 2012년에 모바일로 출시된 작품을 리메이크한 게임이다. 그만큼 그래픽과 사운드는 미려해졌고, 더욱 어려워졌다. 독특한 게임 플레이와 도전적인 난이도는 만족스럽지만, 특유의 조작에 익숙해지지 않는다면 많이 답답한 게임이다.
2D 플랫포머 게임에 익숙한 게이머라면 금방 적응할 수 있겠지만, 컨트롤이 부족할 수 있는 사람에 대한 배려가 부족한 것은 조금 아쉽다. 멀미가 심한 사람은 쳐다보기도 힘들 것이다. 그렇지만 한 번쯤 도전해볼 만한 플랫포머임은 확실하다. 게임은 11월 말에서 12월 초 출시될 예정이다. /편집= 디스이즈게임 김재석 기자

<나트>의 첫인상을 살펴보면 단색으로 구성된 미니멀리즘한 그래픽이 눈에 띈다. 비슷한 게임인 <로코로코>가 화사한 색감으로 배경을 가득 채웠다면, <나트>는 흰색과 검은색 위주의 단색으로 풍경을 묘사하고 있다. 두 색깔 말고도 주황색과 파란색이 등장한다. 주황색은 위험을, 파란색은 획득해야 할 아이템을 상징한다.

PS4로 리메이크된 <로코로코>의 스크린샷. 화면을 기울여 캐릭터를 조작한다는 점에선 동일하다.
스토리는 단순한 편이다. 게임을 시작할 때 보여주는 만화를 보면 주인공 고양이는 죽은 것으로 추정된다. 주인은 슬퍼하며 커다란 나무 밑에 고양이를 묻었는데, 땅속에 묻힌 고양이는 갑작스럽게 부활한다.
그리고 부활한 고양이 앞으로 나무의 영혼이 찾아온다. 영혼은 어둠이 자신의 뿌리를 좀먹고 있다며 자신을 도와주면 소원을 이뤄주겠노라 말한다. 사랑하는 주인에게 돌아가기 위해 고양이는 나무의 영혼을 따라 위험한 여행을 떠난다.

위에서 언급했듯이 플레이어는 화면을 움직여서 우리의 고양이 캐릭터가 목적지까지 도달할 수 있도록 만들어줘야 한다. 간단한 튜토리얼격 스테이지를 클리어하고 나면 게임이 본격적으로 시작되는데, 곧 이런 조작 체계가 참 쉽지 않음을 알 수 있다. 조금만 화면을 기울여도 고양이는 저 멀리 미끄러진다. 또한 화면을 180도 뒤집어 이동할 수도 있기도 한데, 계속 화면을 빙글빙글 돌리다 보면 어지럼증마저 느껴진다.
<로코로코>도 귀여운 그래픽에도 쉽기만 한 게임은 아니었지만, 더욱더 어두운 그래픽을 띄고 있는 나트는 확실히 어려운 게임이라 칭할 만하다. 게임을 진행하다 보면 가시 함정이나 정체불명의 벌레 등 여러 함정이 등장하는데, 여기에 닿을 경우 고양이는 즉시 사망한다. 피격 판정도 상당히 엄격한 편이라 조금만 함정 옆을 스쳐 지나가도 우리의 고양이 캐릭터는 펑! 하며 사라진다.
기본적인 조작법

적절한 암기가 없으면 필연적으로 사망할 수밖에 없는 함정도 자주 등장한다. 컨트롤에 익숙해졌다고 스테이지를 빠르게 돌파하려 했다간 곧 갑작스레 등장한 함정이나 막다른 길에 몰려 게임 오버를 겪을 수밖에 없다. 이런 함정을 돌파하기 위해서는 최대한 속도를 늦추면서 안전하게 이동하거나, 계속해서 게임 오버를 겪으며 어디에 함정이 있는지 몸으로 익히는 수밖에 없다.
특히 스테이지 내내 떨어지며 가시 함정을 피해야 하는 낙하 스테이지에서 이런 특성은 더욱 도드라진다. 플레이어는 계속해서 화면을 꺾어 주며 떨어지는 고양이가 가시에 닿지 않도록 해야 하는데, 미리 화면을 틀지 않으면 통과할 수 없는 좁은 통로가 계속해서 등장한다. 사실상 게임 오버를 겪어보지 않으면 통과할 수 없는 구간. 게다가 이런 함정을 미리 외워둔다고 하더라도 조금만 컨트롤이 틀어질 경우엔 여지없이 게임 오버다.
이런 구간은 미리 암기해두는 것이 아니라면 통과하기가 힘들다
그러므로 많은 실패, 즉 게임 오버는 필연적으로 발생할 수밖에 없다. 중간 체크포인트는 존재하지 않는다고 보는 게 좋다. 파란색 꽃을 수집하면 죽을 때마다 5개를 소모해 스테이지 중간부터 시작할 수 있긴 하다. 하지만 수급량도 부족한데다가, 위에서 말한 '모르면 죽을 수밖에 없는 함정'에 갇혀 목숨을 몇 번 소모하고 나면 금방 동이 난다. 죽으면 스테이지의 맨 처음부터 시작한다고 생각하는 것이 속 편하다.
# 어렵지만, 한 번쯤은 도전해볼 만한 플랫포머 게임
그래도 어려운 게임인 만큼 스테이지를 클리어했을 때의 쾌감은 확실한 편이다. 여러 함정 사이를 요리조리 통과해 출구에 다다랐을 때만큼 기쁜 순간은 없다. 외에도 발상의 전환을 통해 어려워 보였던 구간을 손쉽게 넘어갈 때의 재미도 상당한 편이다. 스테이지를 진행할 때마다 다양한 퍼즐 기믹도 계속해서 추가돼 단조로울 수 있는 게임 플레이에 다양함을 더해준다.
발판을 꼭 넒은 부분에 타야 한다는 법은 없지
나무 영혼에게 빙의해 미로를 통과해야 할 때도 있다.
단색으로 이루어진 미려한 그래픽. 어려운 퍼즐. 몰입감 높은 음악까지. 본래 도전적인 난이도를 가진 2D 플랫포머 게임을 좋아하고, 나트의 독특한 조작 체계에 금방 적응할 수 있는 게이머라면 꽤 괜찮은 게임이 나왔다고 할 수 있다.
하지만 그렇지 않은 사람에게는 조금 곤란할 수도 있겠다. <나트>는 절대로 순한 맛을 가진 게임이 아니니다. 우리의 고양이가 사랑하는 주인에게 돌아가는 길은 참으로 험난하다.
