Today at work I learned something important about using hatches inside of XREFs when using AutoCAD: never use associative hatches for boundary hatches when the boundaries are composed of lines from XREFs, as that will create junk lines in the file you’re making the hatches in (with layer names like $AUDIT_BAD_LAYER or something). Turn the associative hatching off in that case to reduce clutter.

Another thing I learned: you may want hatches inside a separate file from your linework, since that can increase the stability of the program. By making the lines an XREF attachment or overlay, they are immutable, and so your computer doesn’t need to work as much when you’re in that file with the XREF than if you were in the base file adding hatches there. I’m pretty sure immutability is why it’s preferred to put hatches in a separate file anyway.
