현재 저는 타지에서 외노자 생활을 하고 있는데요.
게임 속 주인공처럼
목숨 걸고 고층 건물에 매달려서 창문을 닦고 있는 건 아니지만,
타지에서 집세를 내고, 돈을 아끼고, 체력을 관리하고, 가끔은
내가 왜 여기까지 왔지?
라는 생각을 하면서 살아가고 있다는 점에서
어느 정도 비슷한 삶을 살고 있습니다.
아무튼 저는 원래 도트 그래픽 게임을 좋아하기도 하고,
게임 용량도 생각보다 크지 않길래
약간 무한의 계단마냥, 이거 그냥 가볍게 몇 판 하면 되는 게임인듯ㅎ
조금만 겉핥기로 해봐야지
라는 마음으로
SKY THE SCRAPER를 시작했습니다.
게임을 켜자마자
냅다 튜토리얼이 시작됩니다.
ws로 위 아래로 왔다갔다,
ad로 포물선을 그리며 양 옆으로 왔다갔다하면서,
마우스로 와이핑 하면 됩니다.
조작법도 어렵지 않고
설명도 엄청 복잡하지 않아서,
처음에는 스낵타임 게임인가보다 했는데요,
(약간 유튜브 중국발 게임처럼, 냅다 게임만 간단하게 하고 스토리가 없는 줄 알았습니다.)
(이런 느낌?)
그런데 시작한 지 얼마 안 돼서
집주인 퀘스트가 시작됩니다.
그리고 돈을 내라고 합니다.ㅠ
(5일 rule이 여기에서도...)
이런 상황 속 주인공이 가지고 있는 금액은 바로...
아니 이 자식은 대체 초기 자금조차 없는겨.
까까 하나 사먹으면 돈 사라지겠다.
그나마 대도시 치고 매우 싼 가격을 내라고 하셔서, 어휴 다행이다 하고 말았습니다. (나도 집세로 30달러 낼래. 제발)
참고로 저도 이번주까지 계속
깐깐한 집주인에게 집세 얘기를 듣고 있었어서,
(거의 제 bf보다 보톡 자주 거십니다)
게임 속 집주인이
가차 없이 이때까지 안내면 내쫒을꺼라는 이야기를 하셔서
순간 게임을 끌 뻔했습니다.ㅠㅠ
아니 지금도 집세 내면서 깐깐한 사람 비위 맞추고 있는데,
여기에서도 마음 쫒기면서 집세를 내야 하나 싶어서 너무 피곤했습니다.
(나 돈 냈는데 날 그만 사랑해 제발)
그래서 그런가, 주인공한테 갑자기 확 몰입이 되더라고요,,,니마음이 내마음이다 임마
이후에는 무한 노동 시뮬레이터에서 벗어나,
조금 더 이 주인공에게 몰입하며 게임을 진행하게 되었습니다.
처음엔 아버지에게 연락이 옵니다.
처음엔 안부연락처럼 보였지만,
후일에 스카이는 그냥 돈 벌려고 일하는 단순 노동 캐릭터가 아니라는걸 알게 됩니다.
스카이가 온 이유는 아버지와의 갈등 후 자신의 선택으로
소도시를 떠나 대도시로 온 사람이었습니다.
그래서 이 부분부터
조금씩 게임을 보는 느낌이 약간 달라지기 시작했습니다.
도시에 완전히 아는 사람이 없는 것도 아니에요.
원래 알고 지내던 절친도 있고,
선배도 있고,
새로운 사람들도 만나게 됩니다.
하지만 그렇다고
엄청나게 단단하게 연결된 사람들 사이에서
안정적으로 살아가는 것도 아닙니다.
(저같경 사람이 보이지 않고, 톡과 스크립트만 보이니, 무언가 단절되어있다는 느낌을 크게 받았어요.)
정말 딱 애매하게 혼자입니다.
아는 사람은 있는데
내가 돌아갈 곳은 혼자고,
연락할 사람은 있는데
결국 오늘 하루를 어떻게 보낼지는
내가 결정해야 합니다.
그리고 이 게임에서
중요한 게 시간입니다.
건물을 닦아도 시간이 갑니다.
사람을 만나도 시간이 갑니다.
다른 활동을 해도 시간이 갑니다.
뭘 하나 하면
진짜 하루가 슥 사라집니다.
처음에는 일주일 기한동안 퀘스트 하나 깨야해서
왜 이렇게 시간에 쪼들리게 만들어놨어?
하며 전전긍긍 했는데,
생각해보니까
현실도 똑같더라고요.
일하러 가면 하루가 가고,
친구 만나면 하루가 가고,
운동하면 또 시간이 가고,
집에서 아무것도 안 하고 누워 있어도
놀랍게도 하루가 갑니다.
더 충격적인 건
아무것도 안 했는데도 체력은 떨어져 있다는 겁니다.
(자니까 슬픔이 업데이트 되는게 정말 사람같다)
근데 실제로도 그래요
저 또한 집에만 있으면 무언가 우울해지거든요.
그래서 게임을 하다 보면
계속 선택하게 됩니다.
오늘 돈을 더 벌까?
아니면 사람을 만날까?
체력이 부족한데 쉴까?
근데 쉬면 돈은 언제 벌지?
운동을 해야 하나?
근데 운동하면 또 시간이 가잖아.
그러다 보면
어느 순간 스카이를 관리하는 게 아니라
공략마냥 남의 인생을 조정하는
인생 운영 시뮬레이션을 하는 기분이 듭니다.
이 게임을 하면서
의외로 가장 크게 느낀 건
돈에 대한 압박이 아니었습니다.
저는 오히려
‘일의 효능감’이 생각보다 정말 중요하다는 걸 느꼈습니다.
스카이는 계속 건물을 닦습니다.
어떻게 보면 엄청 단순한 노동입니다.
그런데 건물 하나를 닦고 나면
적어도 눈앞에 결과가 남습니다.
내가 닦은 곳은 깨끗해지고,
돈이 들어오고,
오늘 내가 뭔가를 했다는 느낌이 남습니다.
처음에는
돈을 벌기 위해 일을 한다고 생각했는데,
게임을 하다 보니까
사람이 일을 하는 이유가
돈 하나만은 아닐 수도 있겠다는 생각이 들었습니다.
내가 오늘 뭔가를 해냈다는 감각.
내가 조금이라도 앞으로 갔다는 느낌.
그것도 사람을 계속 움직이게 하는 것 같았습니다.
약간 요즘 읽는 책이 생각나서 더 크게 다가왔습니다.
그리고 또 하나.
이 게임을 하면서
생각보다 자주 외로웠습니다.
스카이는 사람을 꽤 만납니다.
친구도 만나고,
밖에 나가서 활동도 하고,
클럽에도 가고,
여러 사람들과 관계도 만들어갑니다.
그런데도
게임을 하다 보면
계속 외롭다는 느낌이 들었습니다.
왜 그런가 생각해봤는데,
제가 가장 많이 바라보는 공간이
스카이의 집이기 때문인 것 같았습니다.
좁고,
지저분하고,
혼자 사는 공간.
밖에서는 사람을 만나고
무언가를 하고 돌아왔는데,
결국 내가 돌아오는 곳은
혼자 있는 집입니다.
하지만 그 집 안에서
누군가에게 연락이 오면
이상하게 기분이 좋습니다.
메시지 하나가 오는 게
생각보다 반갑습니다.
게임 속에서는
그냥 작은 알림 하나인데,
그 순간에는
“아, 누군가가 나를 생각하고 있구나.”
라는 느낌이 듭니다.
그리고 그 부분에서
제가 이 게임에 왜 이렇게 몰입했는지
조금 알 것 같았습니다.
<느낀점>
저도 지금 타지에서 살고 있습니다.
한국에서 살던 사람들을 뒤로하고
새로운 사람들을 만나고,
원래 알고 지내던 사람들과 계속 연락하고,
집세를 내고,
체력을 관리하고,
돈을 아끼고,
가끔은
내가 이 선택을 정말 잘한 걸까?
라는 생각을 합니다.
분명 제가 선택해서 온 곳인데도
외롭고, 피곤하고, 낯설고,
한국에서는 크게 신경 쓰지 않았던 일들이
여기에서는 훨씬 크게 느껴질 때가 있습니다.

그런데 그런 날
여기에서 새로 알게 된 사람이
같이 뭘 하자고 연락을 해오면
생각보다 정말 기쁩니다.
그냥 연락 하나인데
그게 내가 완전히 혼자는 아니라는 증거처럼 느껴질 때가 있습니다.
그래서 처음에는
스카이 더 스크레이퍼를
도트 그래픽의 창문 닦기 게임이라고 생각했습니다.
조금 지나서는
돈 벌고 월세 내는 생활 시뮬레이션이라고 생각했습니다.
하지만 시간이 지나며,
이 게임은 타지에서 살아남는 게임이기도 하지만, 그 안에서
내가 어떤 사람이 되어갈지를 정하는 게임이었습니다.
(엔딩 분기가 여러가지라는 점에서 더 크게 다가왔습니다.)
돈을 얼마나 벌지, 오늘 무엇을 할지, 누구를 만날지, 얼마나 쉴지,
누구와 계속 연결되어 있을지를 선택하는 게임이었습니다.
처음에는
스카이의 인생을 제가 관리하고 있다고 생각했는데,
어느 순간부터 요즘 제가 제 인생을 어떻게 굴리고 있는지를
게임으로 보고 있는 기분이 들었습니다.
어쩌면 어른이 된다는 건
내 인생을 거창하게 완성하는 게 아니라,
돈도 챙기고,
체력도 챙기고,
사람도 챙기고,
가끔은 망한 하루도 그냥 넘기면서
다음 날을 다시 시작하는 일인지도 모르겠습니다.
그리고 그 과정에서
사람을 계속 살아가게 만드는 건
통장에 찍힌 숫자만이 아니라,
내가 오늘 뭔가를 해냈다는 감각과
누군가와 아직 연결되어 있다는 감각일지도 모르겠습니다.

이 게임을 플레이 하신 많은 분들이 이야기는 업적을 달성했다는 도전과제 욕구가 아니라,
하루하루를 버티는 고됨이 느껴지는게 아쉬웠다고 하지만.
저같은 경우엔 조금 주인공의 삶이 공감이 되어
좋은 점수를 주고 싶은 게임이네요!
