아니, 눈에는 보이지 않으나 이따금씩 목소리가 들려온다.

우리는 그 의미에 관심을 갖기보단 당장에 빠져나갈 방법을 갈구하다 못해 욕을 내뱉었다.
숲은 침묵으로 대답했다.
걷고, 또 걷는 수밖에 없었다.
걷다가 지친 동료 하나가 헬멧을 내던지며 자리에 털썩 주저앉았다.
“젠장! 이래서 우주 해적 따위는 하기 싫었는데!”
그 녀석이 로저 스카 님 앞에서 허리를 110도로 굽혀 인사하던 장면을 생생하게 기억한다.
그날 밤 녀석은 자랑스러운 다크 스타의 일원이 되었다며 펄쩍펄쩍 뛰어다녔고 나는 옆에서 우주 해적이 뭐가 그렇게 좋냐며 시시덕거렸다.

그 순간, 동료의 뒤로 사슴 뿔을 닮은 무언가가 지나갔다.

내 시선은 사슴 뿔을 분명하게 바라본 동료 위에서 멈췄다.

까지 외치다 숨이 끊긴 녀석은 한 그루의 나무로 그 자리에 굳어버렸다.
안타깝게도, 다음 나무가 자라나기까진 5초가 채 걸리지 않았다.

진동하는 꽃향기와 쏟아지는 단말마에 묻히지 않기 위해 무작정 내달렸다.
