Interview with dhk, creator of the visual novel game "Yongsa's Childhood Friend"

*This is an indie game developer interview series. The photos and interview content used in the interview were provided by the creators through Discord, etc. Game developers who are interested in participating in the interview can contact me through various methods (email, Discord, SNS address, post comments, etc.) and I can conduct interviews regardless of the platform. (Depending on the creator's preference, it can be done through a real-time interview or questionnaire!)

Interview: Q (hashiruka48) / A (dhk)

Game Title:   <The Warrior's Childhood Friend>
Genre: Visual novel

Creator: dhk

Q. Hello. Please introduce yourself.
A. Hello! I am dhk, aiming to be a game developer!

Q. What is the meaning behind the title “The Warrior’s Childhood Friend”?
A. It's a common dream that the two main characters have!

Q. What is the story that inspired or motivated you to plan this game?
A. The reason I planned this game is because I had an existing goal! I wanted to make a mobile game, and I needed experience and a portfolio to make that project a success! So I made a relatively simple visual novel called <Yongsa-nim’s Childhood Friend>. There was no particular story that inspired me. I think it was the common clichés that inspired me!

Q. Why did you choose the setting of ‘warrior’ and ‘childhood friends’ and what fun element did you want to convey through it?
A. The warrior represents hope, and the childhood friend represents trust. I chose these two because I think it's good to have positive elements in games!

Q. What is the core message or theme that the game is trying to convey?
A. You can become strong for the person you love! This is the core theme of the game!

Q. How did you set your target user base?
A. We set our target user base as those in their teens to twenties.

Q. What kind of personality and charm does the warrior and childhood friend character have?
A. Rumi has a warm and bright personality, and Leo has a cold and blunt personality. I think it's charming that they have such contrasting personalities but still truly love each other!

Q. What part did you pay the most attention to when designing the character (clothes, expressions, background story, etc.)?
A. I think I paid the most attention to personality!

Q. How were the relationships and conflicts between the main characters conceived?
A. I designed it as a conflict structure that can arise because they truly love each other!

Q. What is the most memorable turning point or junction in the story?
A. When Rumi asked Leo what his dream was, and Leo said that his dream was Rumi's dream, I think the biggest turning point was when Rumi denied it!

Q. Are there multiple endings or choice elements?
A. I didn't think about multiple endings! I like happy endings that end neatly!

Q. What engine did you use and why did you choose it?
A. I used the Ren'Py engine because it's easy to use.

Q. What is the size of the development team and how are each member's roles structured?
A. I did the development itself by myself. I outsourced the illustrations and did all the rest of the work by myself.

Q. If there were any systematic challenges in a story-driven game, what were they and how did you solve them?
A. I think the most important thing is to create a good story! I don't think I've solved it myself. However, if the people who play the game are satisfied, I think it's a success.

Q. What are the technical strategies for implementing emotional expressions?
A. I used basic Ren'Py features. I went in the direction of making it as easy to implement as possible.

Q. What was the most difficult technical and structural challenge during the development period?
A. Since it was a relatively simple visual novel, there weren't any major technical issues. However, since I was developing it alone, it was a bit difficult because I didn't receive any feedback.

Q. What are the criteria for deciding on your art style?
A. I chose it based on my subjective feeling. I wanted a story with a fairy tale feel, so I chose a warm and soft art style!

Q. What did you particularly focus on in character expressions or sprite animation?
A. I don't know much about this part because the art is outsourced.

Q. Is there a tone you choose to express the mood in the background artwork?
A. Because it is a world destroyed by darkness, we used black and white illustrations!

Q. How did you compose the sound elements such as BGM and sound effects?
A. It consists of commercially available classical music!

Q. What are the visual and auditory directing points for emotional immersion in cutscenes and event productions?
A. I tried to find music that fits the situation! Personally, I think auditory production is the key to emotional immersion!

Q. What are some memorable experiences before and after the game was released?
A. There was a generous sponsor who left a review on the funding site (Tumblbug), and reading his great review made me feel really good!

Q. Lastly, please give a word to the users.
A. Thank you for your warm interest even though it is a game that is lacking! I will also work hard to achieve my goal! Let me use this intermission to promote briefly. The game <Love Brave> has started funding on Tumblbug! This time, it is a complete dating simulation game, so if you are interested in dating simulation, please come and take a look! Everyone, have a good day today! Thank you!

Hello, this is Mashuang.

This time I'm back with a light game.

≪ Moebius: Endless Dream ≫

> Go to store page <

The game is part of an escape room game, and the play time is light, around 15 to 20 minutes .

The price is a whopping 2,300 won, which is a great price for a light meal.

So let's take a look at what the game is like overall!

The following contains spoilers for the early part of the game!

When you start the game, you wake up in a small room.

First of all, the graphics are pretty good.

And it seems like there's a story, so I'll play it with focus for the first time in a while.

There's a wallet and ID on the dresser next to the bed.

You can interact by pressing the E key .

And you can press the TAB key to check the items you have.

It looks like the owner of this ID is the main character.

I don't know why my wallet and ID were on the bedside table.

Let's take it for now.

As I looked around, I saw a wedding photo hanging on the wall.

By the way, you can take this too. Should we take a picture first?

There is nothing where the photo was taken.

Now, let's open our inventory and check the photos.

Judging from the monologue above, the man in this wedding photo seems to be the main character himself, and the person next to him is likely his wife.

The protagonist doesn't remember the woman at all. It seems he was kidnapped and held here with no memory of her.

And items in your inventory can be rotated with the cursor.

I tried rotating it...

Oh, there's something written there.

This appears to be the names of two people.

The main character's name was definitely Nicholas .

I think it's probably a shortened nickname. Like how Nicholas is shortened to Niki.

Then, Betty would be a nickname and not my wife's real name.

I think my wife might have something too.

And in the corner there's a very artificial box.

It appears to be locked.

When I interacted with it, a three-digit dial lock appeared.

But so far, you didn't have any idea what the three-digit number was, right?

When it comes to numbers, the only things that come up are the date of birth on your ID or the date your wedding photo was taken...

It's not my birthday, 613, nor is it my wedding date, 517.

So I decided to look around the room a bit more.

There's a light switch next to the door.

There must be a reason why it has a fire-off function, so let's turn it off.

I turned off the lights and looked around, and there were numbers written so clearly.

The person who locked me up, maybe he was a kind person who made sure I escaped?

It's definitely a three-digit number. Let's enter it right away.

There is also something that looks like a printout inside the box.

Let me pick it up and check it out.

It looks like a printout of excerpts from a newspaper article.

This is an article about a driver who died in a car accident.

Since the driver is not the main character, there is no connection between the main character and this article yet.

But I'm curious to see how this article will be used in the future.

Oh, this printout also has something written on the back.

It's not a number... I think it's written as er .

It is not yet known where this will be used.

Let's keep that in mind for now.

I actually thought that I had to accomplish something in this small room to open the next room.

When I interacted with it, it just opened.

If that's the case, I should have opened the door first.

Still, I think I've done everything I can in this small room, so let's get out of here.

When I came out, I found a bigger room.

And there's one more door.

Let's run over there and check if it's a door that just opens like it is now.

As expected, it doesn't open just like that, and there's a password device right next to the door.

Oh, this encryption device requires 8 alphabet characters.

First of all, the only 8-letter alphabet I saw was the main character's name, Nicholas, so I tried it once.

Of course, that's not the correct answer.

Um... Now that I think about it, there was an alphabet called er on the back of the printout, right?

That looks like part of the password. I'm guessing the other six digits are in other items.

For now, this is all I can show you in the review about the game.

The progress we've shown so far is about 30% of the entire game.

In addition, the story is quite profound, and in my opinion after clearing it, all the elements were well-recovered without a single useless part.

Don't worry, there are absolutely no horror elements, despite the atmosphere.

You can enjoy the story by focusing only on escaping the room.

This is a full story analysis and strategy guide for the game.

> Go see <

First of all, after enjoying the game as a whole, I think it is a domestic game, but it does a great job of expressing foreign sensibilities.

The graphics were also of a fairly high standard, and it even gave me the same feeling as the ROOM series , one of my favorite brain games.

And the story was also really good. You did a great job of adjusting the length of the short story, and even though I'm not the type to read stories, you made me focus...

If you can bring back this kind of atmosphere and make another escape room game that people can enjoy for a long time, I will definitely play it.

To be honest, you are talented.

I didn't have high expectations when I saw the price, but it felt like I got hit in the back of the head!

It was a really cool Mashuang-nim who got hit in the back of the head. Thank you.

This is for those who read the Stove Crew review to the end!
