Q. Please introduce yourself (Vaeirus).
A. Hello! I am Virus, a one-man Almantool creator . When I was a third-year high school student, I wanted to create a game with my own characters, so I bought Almantool (RPG Maker) and started making games. My representative work is the dark comedy death game Period Survival series.
Q. What system or production did you focus on the most while producing 《PERIOD SURVIVAL》?
A. There is no specific focus within the game system. You can think of it as just “whatever I want my custom character to do”, such as mafia games, debates, and dance battles.
However, in terms of directing, I tried to show a “dark comedy” through the extreme words and actions of the characters, community users, and reporters, and their values revealed here.
Q. What do you think is the biggest difference between “Period Survival: Final Trial” and previous games?
A. I think it has more advanced graphics and UI than its predecessor, “PERIOD SURVIVAL,” and a more convenient game system. Right after its release, I saw fans playing the game live in the PERIOD SURVIVAL fan club, and this part received the most favorable reviews.
Q. Please tell us the pros and cons you felt while using RPG Maker.
A. The reason I chose Almantool among the many game engines is because I don't know any programming languages. I think that's why Almantool is good because even people who don't know how to program can easily make games. However, since it's a tool specialized for making RPGs, unless you have the ability to develop plugins, it seems like there are limits to the genres you can make.
Q. Please tell us about the most difficult moment during game development and the process by which you solved it.
A. I think the most difficult time was when I lost confidence in my work.
I usually have low self-esteem, so I have a hard time being confident not only in game development but also in all my actions. But whenever that happens, I remember my original intention: “I started game development because it was fun. I will follow my own path no matter what others say.”
Q. If there are any experimental features or structures that you have attempted uniquely as a Tsukuru game, please introduce them.
A. We tried a system that was free from the dot graphics, various maps, and character movement using the arrow keys that are commonly associated with “Tsukur games.”
For our latest work, “Period Survival: Final Trial,” we attempted to implement a 2.5D background, and the quality was satisfactory, so it seems likely that 2.5D backgrounds will appear in future games as well.
Q. Are there any memorable user feedbacks or examples of improvements made based on those feedbacks?
A. Since the story is so vast due to the nature of the genre, there are times when I forget the story of the game I made. Whenever that happens, I refer to the comments of those who have played Period Survival multiple times while playing, and if there are any errors in the development of the chapters released so far, I remember correcting them, and referring to these comments when creating the story of the next chapter.
Q. Please tell us why you decided to release the 《Period Survival Series》 as chapters or episodes and introduce the game!
A. The “Period Survival” series tells the story of singer Hayley, who formed a band by posting a joke on the Internet, and then appeared on the entertainment show “Viagra” with her bandmates, risking their lives.
Because there is so much story, we judged that it would be difficult for users to play through it all at once, so we released it as a chapter-based game. Similar games such as the Danganronpa series and Nege, You Die were also released as chapter-based games, so there are some parts that were influenced by them.
Q. While making various games, what are your own creative philosophy or principles?
A. “I make it however I want.” “I make it for fun.” “I just make it without thinking too much.”
I've been sticking to this since I started making games. Now, I'm a one-man game developer who doesn't make a living from making games, so I think that if I don't make them my way, if I don't have fun making them, I can't continue making them.
If I were to make a living making games, I wouldn't be able to stick to these philosophies, but I think that in order to make a living making games in the future, I need to first become someone who can enjoy making games.
Q. If there is a method you use to overcome the pain of creation during the work process, please tell us.
A. “Creating is not painful. Even if it is painful at the moment, it is just a process of creating better works.” I always think about this. Good works are always accompanied by the pain of creation.
Q. Is there a genre or game style you would like to try in the future?
I would like to try TRPG or puzzle. Compared to the visual novel or adventure genres I have created so far, this genre requires a variety of gimmicks, so I think I will try it after doing enough research on it.
Q. Have you ever considered or experimented with engines other than Almantools (Godot, Unity, etc.)?
A. I have never tried engines that require programming through writing codes because I don't know any programming languages. However, I would like to try it someday if I learn a programming language to a level where I can create a project.
Q. Is there a message you would like to convey to the gamers who have supported your creations so far?
A. As I mentioned in some of the interviews, I am someone who makes games as I please without any concern for the players. However, if you enjoy my games, does that mean I have the potential to be a creator who can make good works?
