Game Introduction

There is no perfect crime in the world! There are only clues that have not been discovered.

The moment it touches, a trace is sure to remain

The period from the end of the Qing Dynasty to the beginning of the Republic of China... a chaotic time when ancient and modern, Eastern and Western cultures were intertwined and clashed.

As the main character in the story of that time, you are caught up in an inevitable whirlpool of conspiracy.

A series of seemingly unrelated incidents gradually draw you into a maelstrom of conspiracy and identity mystery.

How to operate⌨️

Both mouse and keyboard are supported. Basically, all clicks can be performed with the mouse, and the keyboard can be used instead of mouse clicks. Depending on your convenience, you can play with both hands, or with only one hand.

A room with messy data. The narration voice tells the protagonist, Sim Joong-pyeong , how many times he has been here and how long he has been pursuing this case. Sim Joong-pyeong seems to know who the voice is and tells him not to bother him.

And then the next scene... a corpse with a strange smile appears, stabbed in the chest...!!!

Shim Joong-pyeong regains consciousness as if he had woken up from a nightmare!!

When he sees a corpse with a knife stuck in its chest, he realizes that there is a book there that could be the key to the case .

Then Chapter 1: An Unexpected Tragedy begins.

The story begins three years ago, when Sim Jung-pyeong's older brother , Sim Baek-an, who was studying abroad in London, England, suddenly dies under mysterious circumstances . Sim Jung-pyeong, who had a particularly special relationship with his brother, begins to investigate the case, believing that his brother could not have committed suicide despite the police's explanation that it was suicide based on the circumstances. Three years have passed since the investigation began... Sim Jung-pyeong notices that the scene of his brother's death is identical to a murder trick from a mystery novel (a spy novel in the game) and sets out to find the novel's author, Na-pae.

As such, the main story is an investigation into the brother's suspicious death.

And as we conduct this investigation, the six cases we encounter each have their own story.

A mystery game based on modern and contemporary China✍️

This game is set in the late Qing Dynasty, during the modern era of China. At first, I didn't know that the game was deeply related to historical background, but as I played the game, I realized that it was a story very closely related to modern Chinese history. Are you weak in history?! That's okay. Whenever historical knowledge comes up in the game, you can press the R key to see the related knowledge. (Suddenly, it's history time)

Because of this background, the Chinese nationalistic color is strongly revealed, but this part seems to be inevitable because it is the background of the game. It is a story that resonates and touches the hearts of the people, but it may be difficult for foreigners to relate to it. It was difficult, but personally, I don't think I had any unpleasant experiences as a Korean because of the historical aspects while playing.😅 (Please note individual differences)

3D narrative, crazy immersion👏

The game has a total of 6 chapters. It is divided into 6 chapters: Unexpected Tragedy, The Lady in the Drawer, (London), The Illusion of the Furnace, The Voyage of Death, The Labyrinth Cabin, (London) The City of Labyrinths . Each story has a different background and the type of murder case is different, so you can solve various cases.

As it is a time of modernization, there are also incidents related to superstition.

There are also classic mystery novel themes such as locked room murders and serial murders , as well as cases that use unique tricks such as murders disguised as accidents . The characters that appear in each story are three-dimensional and their interests are complex, so it’s fun to try to figure out who the culprit is. The motives of the culprit that you find out after solving the case are also reasonable, so I thought that a lot of care was put into the story. (First of all, no one kills someone just because they threw a clothes hanger. Lol)

There are some people who seem suspicious at first glance, but the fun of this game is the process of turning those suspicions into logical inferences through evidence and arguments !! It feels like you're doing a real-life inference. The immersion is crazy.

And when I played through the first two chapters, I thought the events in each chapter were unrelated. But when I played through to the end, I realized that all the events were related (!!). You will realize that all the events were tragedies that resulted from the historical background .

The story is really solid, and the more I played, the more I got into it. In fact, modern China is not a familiar setting to us, and because it is closely related to historical background, there were some parts that were difficult to understand at first. But as I played the game and learned about the historical background, and as I empathized with Shim Jung-pyeong's story, I felt like I was in the Yangtze River.

Attractive characters

The main characters Sim Joong-pyeong, A-bok, and Moon Ga-heun

I think the character designs are really well done. Even though they change to SD when you play, the illustrations are fun to look at. The characters have personality traits that you often see in animations or games. It's fun because each of their stories and their personality combinations are good.

Just looking at the combination of the upright belief of justice itself + the taciturn and polite personality of 'Sim Joong-pyeong' and the quirky and lively assistant of Sim Joong-pyeong, 'Abok' who loves food, is a machine nerd, you can guess what kind of feeling it will have. (Familiar taste is delicious)

In addition to the main characters, the characters that appear in the story also have various stories that are interesting. A daughter who struggles to do what she loves without telling her family... A young man who the townspeople thought was a rascal but was actually quite capable... There really isn't a single character without a story, which makes you immerse yourself in the story even more.

A well-crafted trick🧠

As I mentioned above, each chapter deals with one case. Each trick is intricately woven, so it's quite difficult... (I think I'm just bad at reasoning) (It's said that Detective Conan's early education was useless.) It takes 1-2 hours per chapter to solve a case.

Scene investigation: Closely examine the scene of a crime or specific furniture.

Examine the body: Examine the body to see if there are any traces left.

Investigative Investigation: Meet the townspeople, hear their stories about the incident, and inspect for suspicious items.

The basic investigation of a case is comprised of on-scene investigation, body examination, and inquiry investigation . You move around the scene of the incident in a horizontal scrolling manner and collect evidence that could serve as evidence. During the collection process, questions arise, and when these questions are all resolved, the real investigation begins.

The condition of the corpse is set in detail, and the on-site investigation is well-made to include useful parts for reasoning, so rather than just telling what is set in stone, you get the feeling that you are actually getting closer to the truth as you investigate. The tricks are really well-twisted, so it's fun✨

Once the investigation begins, the case is solved by utilizing the evidence collected during the investigation. Sometimes the evidence is presented, but sometimes it involves confronting people with awkward parts during interrogation.

There are also deduction lives(?). Each time the evidence presented is wrong or the deduction goes wrong, the number of lives decreases. If all of them decrease, you will see the bad ending ^_^ I didn't want to know either. Since it supports auto-save, even if you see the bad ending, you can immediately return to the point where you were deduction.

I enjoyed Chapter 3, “The Welcome to the Furnace,” the most. It was fun to unravel the chemical tricks behind the curse of the statue. I could really feel the atmosphere of the times, from the Middle Ages, where there were many superstitions, to modern times, where answers were found based on scientific evidence. This case was the only murder case where there was no body left, which made it even more interesting. There are also hints, so you can refer to them when you’re having trouble.

Variations of different mysteries🤔

If you thought you'd be repeating the same reasoning in every chapter, NO! Different gimmicks are added in each chapter . You can argue with the criminal and argue back and forth, connect pieces of evidence, listen to group testimonies, and have your assistant Abok do the reasoning instead of the main character Sim Joong-pyeong, so each chapter has different reasoning elements so you can play without getting bored!

Various detective gimmicks

In fact, if it had been just a repetition of on-scene investigation, body examination, and interrogation up to Chapter 6, it would have been boring and I wouldn't have been able to finish it. Since there are different elements every time, I was looking forward to what elements there would be this time.

I think I first saw it after graduating from elementary school...^_^

Also, in the middle of the investigation, there are minigames that aren't minigames(?), such as unlocking locks or making reagents. It's fun because it feels like you're investigating directly. Of course, since the main focus of the game is deduction, there's a 'skip' option for those who want to skip. I did them all because it was fun 😋 In particular, making luminol reagents was fun.

Some attractive criminals I want to point out sometimes😸

At the end of each chapter, you are asked to point out the culprit. At this time, there was a list of ridiculous culprits in each chapter, which was a little fun in the game. Of course, the answer was wrong... Various creatures (?) such as chickens, cats, and dragons can be pointed out as the culprit, and this absurdity was the humorous point of the game.

In fact, it deals with the heavy subject of a murder case, and as it progresses, it gets entangled with social issues and the atmosphere becomes darker and darker. I think these small humor points balance out the heavy atmosphere.

In the middle of the game, you go back to London three years ago and investigate your brother's death. London has a completely different atmosphere from China, and you can feel it differently. Who on earth killed your brother?

There's a reason why OSTs are sold🎶

The Yangtze River Murders has an OST as DLC. I think the fact that they released the soundtrack as DLC shows how confident they are... The music mixed with oriental instruments goes well with the historical setting. And the background music changes depending on the mystery situation, and this change makes you even more immersed in the mystery.

In fact, it takes quite a while to figure out the mystery, so I often listen to the background music over and over again, but I don't get tired of listening to it over and over again for a long time. I think it's a well-made OST that takes into account the tempo of the game!
Dubbing to enhance immersion👂

As it is a Chinese game, it is basically dubbed in Chinese . In London, there is an English dubbing . It may be a matter of preference for those who are not familiar with Chinese dubbing. Personally, I think it is an element that allows me to immerse myself more in the background!

Maybe it's because the voice actors are so good at acting, but I felt immersed as if I was in a period drama. It felt like I was listening to the mystery on the spot...🤓 If you don't want to hear the dubbing, you can turn it off in the settings, so please keep that in mind when playing!

There were occasional typos. And sometimes, characters who used to speak informally would suddenly start speaking formally. It didn't affect the gameplay, but it was a bit disappointing. And the poem(?) that appears in the scene that transitions to the next chapter wasn't translated ㅠㅠ I wondered what it meant!!

Confusing UI

Since the mystery gimmick has changed, the UI has to change as well. I've died a lot because I misunderstood the UI for presenting evidence during interrogation...lol When I looked, I saw that you can't just present evidence, you have to present evidence that matches the testimony. Actually, other than this part, there wasn't anything particularly difficult.
