들어가기 앞서
하던 리뷰 미뤄두고 또 딴짓하고 있는 감고양이입니다. 이번에 소개할 게임은 '다이스 이터[Dice Eater]'라고 하는 인디, 추리, 카드 게임입니다. 이 게임을 알게 되고 플레이하게 된 계기는 스토브 인디 커뮤니티에서 해당 게임을 리뷰한 글을 보게 되어 알게 되었고, 스테퍼 케이스를 재밌게 했다 보니(스핀 오프인 스테퍼 리본도 재밌게 했습니다.) 어떤 게임인지 궁금하여 다운로드하고 플레이하게 되었습니다.(그와 별개로 스팀 평가 복합적, 커뮤니티에선 게임 대충 만든 것 같다는 평가가 있다 보니 도대체 어떻게 만들었길래 평가가 이런 거지?라는 생각에 더더욱 하게 되었습니다.)
그럼 본격적으로 제 생각을 말하기 앞서 이 게임의 플레이 영상을 보여드리도록 하겠습니다

리뷰
우선 이 게임의 스토리... 라기보단 콘셉트를 말하자면 다음과 같습니다.
스테퍼(초능력자)와 스테프(마도구)가 존재하는 세상에 어느 대부호가 특정 스테프를 상품으로 건 카드+주사위 게임을 한다는 소식을 듣고 플레이어/주인공은 해당 게임이 주최되고 있는 어느 여객선에 올라 게임을 진행한다.
정도가 이 게임의 콘셉트였습니다. 일단 이 게임에 스토리가 존재하긴 하나 실질적으로 그 비중이 크지 않고 마지막 엔딩 부분에서 몰아서 풀어낸다는 느낌이 들었기에 스토리라기보단 콘셉트로 보였습니다.
게임의 조작 방법은 간단했습니다. 기본적으로 그냥 마우스 클릭으로 진행되었으며 Q나 W 등으로 특정 기능을 빠르게 실행할 수 있는 정도였으니까요.
게임의 진행 방식역시 간단했습니다. [게임을 진행한다. 진행하면서 상대방이 무슨 스테프를 사용하는지, 즉 어떤 능력을 쓰는지 찾아내고 그 능력의 허점을 노려 승리한다.] 정도로 요약이 가능했으니까요.
하지만 게임의 시스템은 잘 만들지 못했습니다. 후에 자세히 언급하겠지만 마치 연극처럼 정해진 시나리오에 맞춰서 움직이는 느낌? 이전까지는 잘 싸우다가 어떤 능력인지 밝혀내면 웅장한 BGM으로 바뀌면서 일부러 져주는 듯한 느낌이 들었습니다.
게임의 그래픽은 2D 그래픽 그중 현실과 애니메이션 사이에 위치한 그래픽을 갖고 있었으며 스테퍼 케이스 시리즈 특유의 깊고 어두운 분위기를 갖은 게임이었습니다.
사운드의 경우... 솔직히 신세계의 Big Sleep이라는 OST를 참고한 건가?라는 생각이 드는 BGM이 주된 BGM이었는데... 전반적인 BGM의 수가 게임의 플레임 타임 대비 적다는(실질적으로 1개, 전체적으론 3~4개 정도) 느낌이 들었습니다. 효과음의 경우도 수는 적지만 적었지만 있어야 할 곳엔 있다는 느낌이었습니다.
버그는 없었으며 장단점으로 요약하여 설명하면 단점밖에 남지 않기에 이번에는 잡담 느낌으로 게임이 어떠했는지 말하려고 합니다.
일반인에게도 스테퍼 케이스를 재밌게 했던 사람들에게도 추천하기 어려운 게임이었습니다.
도박묵시룩 카이지 등에서 나온 제한이 있는 가위바위보 카드게임에 추리를 얹은 것은 좋았으나 이 게임의 핵심이자 기존 스테퍼 케이스 시리즈를 좋아했던 이유 중 하나인 추리가 매우 미흡했습니다.(그렇다고 카드게임이 재밌는것도 아니였고요.)
챕터 3을 기준으로 이야기하자면, 챕터 3의 기믹은 상대방과 자리를 교체하는 것이고 그 방법을 알아내는 방식이 뒤에 있는 조각상의 모양인데, 일반적인 게임이라면 눈에 바로 보이는, 즉 바로 눈앞에 있는 조형물의 모양을 바꾸는데 이 게임은 조형물 모양은 내버려두고, 매뉴얼에 있는 조사하기를 통해 설명되는 텍스트 몇 자를 바꾼 것으로 다르다고 설명하고 있었습니다.(다른 챕터들도 동일합니다.)
이러다 보니 사람들이 어떻게 클리어하는지 몰라서 '대충 딴짓하는 동안 카드 바꾸면 이기더라'라고 말을 할 정도로 직관적이지 못했습니다.
능력의 정체가 밝혀지면 부들거립니다.
그 추리를 통해 능력을 밝혀내기 전은 물론 능력을 밝혀낸 이후에도 문제가 있었습니다. 위에서 말했다시피 연극을 한다는 느낌이 들 정도로 승률 차이가 났습니다. 상대방의 능력을 모르면 마치 플레이어가 뭘 낼 줄 알고 이기는 패를 매우 높은 확률로 내었는데(약 80%), 상대방의 능력을 확인하는 순간 웅장한 BGM과 동시에 NPC의 승률이 급격히 떨어졌습니다.(20% 정도) 만약 이 상태에서 뭐 발악이라도 하고 다른 패턴을 사용했으면 모르겠는데, 이 게임은 능력이 뭔지 밝혀지고 한다는 게 부들거리는 것밖에 없었기에 추리를 통해 상대방의 능력을 알아내고 승리한다 하더라도 성취감이 없었습니다.(애초에 짜고 치는 게임 같아서 그렇기도 하고요.)
스토리도 좋은 방식은 아니었습니다. 이 게임은 실질적으로 마지막에 스토리를 전개하는 느낌이었는데, 이때 나름 본편의 인물들을 간접적으로 등장하고, 사실 주인공은 본편의 인물들과 연관되어 있던 인물이라고 알려주는데... 그 과정을 차곡차곡 쌓아서 진행하는 게 아닌 갑작스럽게 전개하다 보니 억지로 연관성을 갖게 하기 위해 넣었다는 느낌이 들었습니다.
그러다 보니 본편을 재밌게 했던 사람들도, 본편을 모르는 사람들에게도 추천하기 힘든 게임이었습니다.
마무리
마무리하겠습니다. 재미없는 게임이었습니다. 이전작들은 초능력과 마도구가 있는 세계관 그리고 추리/퍼즐을 잘 섞어서 게임을 완성시켰던 것에 비해 이 게임은 잘 섞어내지 못하였고 스토리도 억지로 본편과 연결시키기 위해 끼어 넣었다는 느낌이 들었습니다.
