Hello, this is Stove Crew's Moon Seon-woo!

This game is a storytelling game, different from the games I've reviewed before.

Especially since it was first released 20 years ago, I have watched the story of this game nearly 100 times, which is why I have such deep affection for the game!

I'll put the background music for this game in the link below, so I recommend listening to it while reading the review!

So let me introduce you to this cinematic game.

Coffee Talk

The Coffee Talk story begins in Seattle in 2020.

The setting is a downtown cafe that is not much different from the daily lives we live in now.

And we will continue the conversation with the store manager and barista at Cafe Coffee Talk.

The way the game progresses is almost identical to Valhalla , which many people are familiar with.

But if Valhalla gave differences in recipes through the ratio and quantity of ingredients,

Coffee Talk can provide various results through combination of basic base, main ingredients, and secondary ingredients.

Through this, it is possible to produce mint chocolate milk, which many people like and dislike.

In addition to the main system where you view the story, there is also an endless mode .

In this mode, there is a free mode where you can freely experiment with various recipes.

There is a challenge mode where you have to make a drink that an NPC wants within a limited time.

This mod allows you to progress through the story with all recipes unlocked from the beginning...

I don't recommend it. There is a certain fun in progressing through the story ,

Because it is a part that may leave you with regrets as the game progresses.

If you make a drink using milk, you can draw latte art .

In certain circumstances, there are situations where latte art must be provided as well.

There are also latte art related challenges in the challenges.

And above all, it's quite difficult... (I... still know how to draw...!)

And of course, the story is accompanied by plentiful and addictive background music.

All of the background music was composed by one of the developers, so you can find it on the developer's official YouTube channel.

It's also perfect for listening to while you sleep.

I intentionally left out any of the game's story and only looked at the game's core systems first.

So, before we go ahead and look at the main content of the game that you are most curious about,

What does the title of this review, “A Little Different,” mean?

Skin color? Growth process? Physical?

Surprisingly, this is a story told by the characters in the game themselves.

Now let's get into the full story review.

A story told by completely different people

We talked about them being slightly different people, but from our perspective, they are all different people from us.

All characters in Coffee Talk are races that exist in a fantasy world.

Elves , dwarves, orcs , werewolves , humans...

Even the worldview that includes aliens is projected onto the modern world we live in.

(Of course, they are also surprised to see aliens.)

These people are people just like us, they go to college, work, and date.

And inevitably, there is conflict in these human relationships.

Just because I'm an elf, my family is against my love life .

Orcs who work hard at coding at companies form unions and protest against the continued discriminatory hiring system .

Also, werewolves and vampires ended their long war and signed a peace treaty.

I don't know why, but don't they look a lot like us?

In this worldview, in addition to the things mentioned above, we also know Kuchela, the World Health Organization (WHO),

There are even newspapers that report this news, and even food products like coffee, tea, and milk are exactly the same.

The only difference is their 'race' .

How is this worldview different from the world we live in?

To those who think of us as characters in a fantasy world, we are all people living on the same Earth.

Why should we discriminate against each other simply because of the color of our skin, or rule over those we consider superior and inferior simply because we live in noble families?

This human female , who simply lives in the game, is a writer who submits short stories to newspapers.

And she writes about what she saw, heard and experienced in a cafe in a world where only 'humans' exist, in one novel.

The vampire says, as if he doesn't understand the novel she is writing.

"How can discrimination exist in a world where only humans exist?"

Their skin color is different, their growth process is different,   The physical conditions are different.

People are constantly looking for differences from others .

If the world of the first coffee talk was a fantasy world with characters living in our modern society,

I felt it was very refreshing because it was a game created with the concept of .

However, on the contrary, in that worldview, I envisioned a worldview in which only one race exists,

I thought it was a great counter-intuitive idea to think that even that worldview would have the same problems.

Discrimination existed even in the past when we still thought the world consisted of only China, Korea, and Japan.

Because of being disabled, not having parents, being of low social status, etc.

And even after we realize that the map was actually a vast map of the Earth, it remains the same.

Parents' academic background, the district they live in, and even the fact that we heard about their parents' special education when we were young...

I sometimes think that perhaps discrimination is an inherent instinct of all living beings.

Or maybe they are arrogant creatures who only think from a human perspective, and so they think that they would discriminate against other intelligent life forms?

The important thing is to recognize each other's differences and resolve conflicts well.

As is the rule of storytelling games, this game also allows you to see various multiple endings through the process of mediating these conflicts well.

And depending on the character's occupation, a single action can have a huge impact on a completely unrelated character.

(I did it roughly as a joke, but I feel a little sorry that a completely unrelated character suddenly ended badly...)

In the final ending, you will be put in a situation where you cannot help but play the game a second time, with a huge twist.

You shouldn't end it thinking it's the end.

A profound and philosophical story, but with a disappointing level of completion

This is a game with a really delicious story.

I really enjoy philosophical discussions, and I also enjoy discussions and drinking stories about them.

I think it's a topic worth thinking about at least once.

I remember writing on a similar topic in a class where we planned our own storytelling game based on this story!

(Of course, I ruined the perfection of Noh Nu Na too much...)

But there were some regrettable aspects to Coffee Talk as well.
Actually, this game has no negative elements at all, but as a reviewer, I have to do it no matter what.

This is a constant translation issue.

Coffee Talk is actually a game developed by an Indonesian company.

That's why there are so many cars in Southeast Asia.

The problem was that, in the flow of the story, I was very embarrassed when, from a Korean perspective, I suddenly ordered a car from the mainland.

(In fact, if you knew the character's job, personality, etc. in the work, I think this guy would never explain the materials.)

If you think about it the other way around, from our perspective, it's like going to a cafe in America and saying "Ashotchu, please" ...

You can laugh it off, right?

However, there were also issues with the consistency of translation. For example, there were parts where the story called for a ginger latte, but the recipe called it a ginger latte.

Also, I don't know if it only happens in certain situations, but sometimes I miss conversations and when I look at the conversation log, the text overlaps.

I only witnessed it once, and I couldn't confirm it after that because I didn't look closely...

(If you find it, please leave a comment! I didn't attach it separately because it might be an additional spoiler.)

And there was also a bug related to the ending.

In my case, I played it a long time ago and recently started playing it again, so I collected all the perfect endings on my first playthrough.

But later on, I wanted to possess some of the retired baristas and see the bad endings of all the characters.

However, there is a bug where a character who once got the bad ending suddenly gets the good ending in the final ending.

(This content has been minimized due to spoilers)

So if you want to see all the endings, I recommend you start with the bad endings of all the characters in the first episode.

Otherwise, since you can create up to 3 characters in total, I recommend that you create a barista version of the game and proceed.

finish

I tried my best to make it as perfect as possible. But even so, I feel like the flaws are more than compensated for by the story being so perfect...

Actually, there was one thing I wanted to point out as a disadvantage. It was that the recipe was too poor.

Coffee Talk uses a variety of beverage ingredients, but there are only about 6 specific recipes for each base.

If you want to make drinks with other combinations, try lemon mint coffee, ginger cinnamon cocoa

This is how the drink comes out...

(Of course, there are times when I want this... what's up with your appetite?)

But the reason I didn't mention it,

Coffee Talk has a sequel, Coffee Talk 2: Hibiscus & Butterfly!

Two types of tea leaves have been added as main ingredients, and it has new characters and a story that is just as good as the first one!

And the recipe that was disappointing has been further improved, and drinks with novel combinations have also been registered in the recipe.

(Is mint milk cocoa now also called mint chocolate?)

First of all, Coffee Talk's third work, Coffee Talk: Tokyo , was released in August of last year and is scheduled to be released this year.

Does that mean that the second installment was also a huge box office success?

The argument that the second work of Naruto, which the addict said was a poor work, does not apply to Coffee Talk.

But unfortunately, Coffee Talk 2 is not available in the Stove Store.....

But, if the response to this review is good!

Let's also review Coffee Talk 2.

I enjoyed playing Coffee Talk once again through this review.

thank you!
