누군가를... 사랑스러운 누군가를 캔버스에 담고 싶은 날이 오다니, 그런 생각을 하니 얼굴이 달아오르는 것을 막을 수 없었다.
붓을 잡은 지 몇 년이나 지났지만 이런 마음은 처음이었다.
그런 소원을 품고 3층 침대의 중간에 누워 있던 마유리는 위층에서 잠이 든 스오우를 향해 손을 뻗었다.
「어쩌지, 스오우가 자는 모습이 보고 싶어졌어⋯⋯」
무심결에 아무에게도 안 들릴 정도의 목소리로 중얼거렸다.
부스럭하고 몸을 뒤척이는 소리에 순간 흠칫했다. 자신의 못된 생각이 전해졌나 싶었다.
결국 지금 당장 연인의 잠든 모습이 보고 싶다는 욕망에 못 이겨 계단에 손을 올렸다.
스오우가 깨지 않도록 조심스럽게 살며시 들여다봤다.
마유리는 규칙적으로 숨소리를 내며 평온하게 자고 있는 스오우의 얼굴을 바라보며 정말 요정 같다고 생각했다.
긴 속눈썹은 가느다란 초승달처럼 아름다웠고, 작은 입술은 벚꽃 봉오리를 떠올리게 했다. 그런 생각을 하며 멍하니 스오우를 바라보고 있자──
「마유리──?」
졸린 눈으로 마유리를 바라보는 스오우의 눈동자.
잠깐의 침묵 끝에 그제야 스오우는 잠에서 깼고, 지켜보고 있었다는 걸 인지하고는 이불을 입가까지 끌어올려 새빨갛게 물든 얼굴을 가리고 마유리에게 물었다.
「호, 혹시 계속 보고 있었어?」
「미안, 스오우 생각을 하다 보니 너무 보고 싶어져서⋯⋯」
망설임 없이 사실대로 말했다. 짧은 침묵 뒤에 스오우의 하얀 손끝이 스르륵 뻗어와 마유리의 입술을 매만졌다.
그건 둘 사이의 암호 같은 것으로 격양된 마음을 알리는 신호였다.
둘은 맨 아래층에서 깊이 잠든 릿카를 깨우지 않기 위해 방을 나섰다.
기숙사 바로 옆의 벚나무가 둘만의 장소였다.
맑은 밤하늘에 떠오른 달빛이 겹쳐진 두 사람의 형상을 비춘다. 입술로 서로의 체온을 확인한 둘은 하늘을 올려다본다.
「오늘따라 유난히 달이 예쁜걸」
「정말 예쁘네. 손이 닿았다면 좋았을 텐데」
달을 향해 손을 치켜들면서 눈부신 듯 눈을 가늘게 뜨고 달을 바라보는 스오우의 옆모습을 보며 마유리는 조용히 말했다.
「스오우한테 그림 모델을 부탁하고 싶어」
순간 얼굴을 빨갛게 물들인 채 곤란한 듯 놀란 표정으로 가만히 서 있던 스오우는 이내 손을 마구 휘저으며 마유리에게 허둥지둥 말했다.
「모, 모델이라니 나한테는 무리야! 해 본 적도 없는걸!」
「상관없어. 나는 아름다운 너를 있는 그대로 그리고 싶을 뿐이야」
조금 전에도 그런 생각을 했더니 참을 수 없을 만큼 사랑스러웠다고 말했다.
왠지 얼굴이 더욱 새빨개진 스오우는 역시 부끄러워서 못 하겠다고 말한 뒤, 이어서
「나는 그, 그런 경험도 없고, 역시 누드 모델은 무리야!」
「응──?」
마유리는 잠시 생각에 잠기더니 한 결론에 이르렀다.
'그런가, 그랬었지'라며 1년 전에 있었던 일을 떠올렸다.
릿카까지 셋이 함께 클럽하우스를 둘러보던 그때, 미술부 입부를 권유할 때 자신이 했던 말을──
“시라하네 양 같은 미인의 알몸을 감상할 수 있다면 회비도 싸게 드는 거지” 그런 말을 했던 기억을.
자기도 모르게 웃음이 나왔다.
「저기── 혹시 다른 얘기야!?」

마유리는 엉큼한 미소를 지으며 방금 떠올린 말을 전했다.

그렇게 귓가에 속삭였다.
품에 안은 스오우의 체온을 느끼며, 지금 스오우가 어떤 표정을 하고 있을지 상상하는 것만으로도 마유리는 행복을 느꼈다──.
